I second this. The Chun mount is awesome. Makes taking it down and putting it back up a breeze.

Unfortunately the harness mod will make things a bit more complicated since we have to use another USB-C cable to plug into the secondary port in the Comma, but I think I can use a magnetic USB-C adapter to make it easier.
I thought about that too and it will have to be long enough to clear the back of the Comma when inserted. Some of the mag ones aren't that deep.

Exactly. I measured it out and I think a magnetic adapter attached to a USB-C extension piece should be just the right length to clear it.

I’m really excited about the rapid developments here even though I’ve never experienced a car driven by a Comma. I’m probably getting one after the longitudinal control via steering wheel buttons is worked out.

If, when the dust settles, it’s about as good as Tesla AP then it makes me wonder why some manufacturers are even bothering to come up with their own solution. The Gen1 Rivians have, I think, 9 cameras and the MobilEye system all doing a worse job than a Comma AI with 3 cameras and OpenPilot. It seems like Rivian spent a lot more on hardware, and possibly development, to get a system so bad they abandoned development after 3 years of vehicle sales. This seems like a waste to me.

I bet manufacturers could sell vehicles with a Comma-Ready option which includes the connections and a factory-installed magnetic mount. It could be a high-margin option and the manufacturer could absolve themselves of dealing with most of the support owners need. This would be like the cell phone integration kits manufacturers sold before Bluetooth. “Oh, you need to talk to your cellular provider about problems with your phone.”

Edit: typo

Gerry,
I've got a Comma 3X harness which I installed (except for the mount) 3 or 4 days ago. My Chun mount is supposed to arrive on Monday. I'd like to have the longitudinal control accessible thru Rivian's speed control buttons....BUT, if I understand you correctly, if I get Lukas' box, I'm going to need to run another cable to the Comma unit. That would cause two "problems"....1) It sounds like I'd have a cable hanging from the unit (I've run the initial cable under the A-Pillar moulding) and 2) it sounds like there MIGHT be an issue with the Chun mount clearance. Any clarification/guidance you can provide would be helpful.

Hey Doc! I have a Chun mount as well so I'll let you know if I run into any issues. I don't forsee clearance being an issue, just the minor annoyance of having two cables running to the comma instead of one. And hopefully I can still gerryrig a magnetic solution so taking it on and off is still relatively painless.

Very true. The reason they don't do this is $$. Rivian wants to develop their own system so they can be in control of it and sell it to other manufacturers (like VW Group).

Actually, Aptera is an example of a manufacturer that IS using Openpilot as their ADAS solution when (or really IF) they go into actual production.

Is it possible to adjust driving personality in Luka's version? Mine is greyed out even after reboot. Thanks.

I think I was able to change mine. Try going into Off-road Mode first.

Okay I'll try that. Does it shorten the follow distance (what I am really looking for)?

I understand that and, to me, this seems to mirror the rationale for omitting screen projection but worse. ADAS is arguably more complex and higher liability than infotainment. I think in both cases the manufacturer is solely trying to out-develop a community of developers and thinking they can do better.

This gives consumers who don’t like their solutions reason to buy a competing vehicle or work around them and cobble together solutions which provide no revenue to the manufacturer. Maybe the manufacturers need to embrace the more standard solutions and sell access to the vehicle’s systems for a recurring fee. Like Connect+ but for access to on-board data rather than cellular data. This would give consumers a path to their preferred solution and still provide revenue to the manufacturer.

I bet owners would be happier if they could choose to use the Rivian systems or a BYO hardware integrated standard solution.
  • Rivian infotainment, phone + Android Auto, or phone + CarPlay
  • Rivian ADAS, Comma + OP, or (assuming Tesla does such a thing) Tesla hardware + AP

If Rivian charges for integration to permit the use of these BYO options then they can use the revenue to make their systems better and more competitive.

My intent is NOT for this to devolve into another CarPlay argument, but rather to point out that as solutions are developed which can provide the same functionality in different vehicles, manufacturers who choose to ignore those solutions may not be doing themselves any favors in the long run.

Yeah, that's what it's supposed to do anyway.

Hmm, tried off road, tried removing saved vehicle, rebooted after each change, no dice. Still greyed out. I might try reinstalling - other ideas?

Hmmm... Lukas might have disabled it for this build then until we get the button presses working. What you MIGHT be able to do is toggle on "Sunnypilot Longitudinal" in the developer menu, and just keep it on long enough to change the driving personality. I do think it will let you change it if you have that activated. Just don't keep it on - toggle it back off after you've made the change. I think the change will stick.

I’ve ordered the 3x and harness that is offered there for the Rivian.
Question : how does one order Lukas’s harness? Or the add on to the original harness(which I’m assuming is what we’re calling the one chosen in the Comma Ai site)?
