Omg, close call! Car ran a red light and almost t-boned us. Would the Rivian R1S cameras have captured this? Am I able to retrieve the video? Thank you for any help. And thank you Rivian for amazing brakes!

The gear guard app should have it under incident of you had to slam on brakes.

Did you install a secondary drive or memory stick? If not, then you will not have a saved drive cam video. Unless...... as stated above, the vehicle will save a video to the onboard memory if it sensed an extreme maneuver, like hard braking, loss of control, sudden stop like in a crash or even heavy acceleration like during a launch.

If you set it up correctly, you can pull the recording from your SSD you installed. I did that when I witnessed another car crash so I could send it to the police.

if you have an external device plugged in, you can plug it straight into your phone to review and save the videos. Super handy!

My gear guard wasn't working well and it went in for service. Seems like it's working well now. Is the drive recording supposed to record every drive or just some? I only see some drives but not others. Just curious.

Only if you have an external drive plugged in will it record continuously

Anyone have a recommendation for an external drive that you know works well with Rivian?

Yes, I have the external drive but it doesnt record continuously.
What do you mean? Why would yours not record continuously?

Are you saying you installed an external drive but then turned off Road Cam? Curious what the use case would be for that.

I've been using this for two years without issue.

  • TOUGH & TRUSTED: Files stay secure, no matter the terrain; Samsung's flash memory technology makes the Type-C a trustworthy drive to store your valuable data; It's waterproof, shock-proof, magnet-proof, temperature-proof, and X-ray-proof body, plus it's backed by a 5-year limited warranty

No, Road Cam is on, along with every other cam. Say I drive to the gym in the morning, then the office and back home (yes my life is boring); it will only record one of the three drives. My car is a little over 1.5 years old. When I installed an external drive, and the car was new, everything worked fine. Then after the 2nd or 3rd SW update, it stopped working. It would not record any of the drives. The SC sent two seperate mobile techs and they told me to get a different external drive. That did not solve the issue. A few weeks ago it went in to the SC and they replaced a component. This seems to have helped as I now see certain drives recorded but not all. Could it be that only some drives are showing on the car dash and the rest are saved on the external drive and I have to get on a laptop to see ALL my driving?

This is not a big deal to me unless I get in an accident. I know the car "hard drive" records impacts etc but I've read situations where it didnt. So, the ability to record ALL driving would be great.

Gotcha. Yes, you need to plug the external hard drive into a computer (or your phone) to see all of your drives. The screen in the vehicle only shows triggered events and manual recordings. Hope that helps.

When you install a USB-C drive and turn Road Cam on, the Gear Guard cameras can record and save video of entire trips (up to the maximum space available on your external drive). When something catches your eye, tap the Save Clip button on your center display, and Gear Guard will make a two-minute video clip. You can then watch the two-minute clip directly on your center display or download it — and all the remaining video you’ve captured — with the external drive to watch it on a computer.
