I purchased a 2022 R1T used in April. I used the camp speaker once then put it back in the dock. I pulled it out today and the speaker seems dead. It won't turn or or show any sign of life.

I plugged in a USB -C wall charger and it a started to play just fine. Has anyone had issues with charging in the truck?

UPDATE -- Spoke with Rivian customer support and was informed that the dock only maintains the charge level, it does not actually charge the camp speaker. I was told to use a wall charger and then put the camp speaker back. If it goes dead, then I should call to have the dock inspected by service.

This seems a bit odd to me, does anyone have any insight into this?

I don't think anyone completely understands how the camp speaker works. It's true that if it goes dead you need to take it out and plug it in to a USB-C charger. But in my experience if it's in the dock it will charge most of the time, but not all the time. Look up in the user manual how to reset the speaker - I find that when it misbehaves you can reset it and that fixes most things. I kind of like the speaker when I can get it to work, but that usually requires me to pull out the instructions ...

The camp speaker works best when allowed to completely discharge and stored in your garage. Get a drawer instead it is more useful. The camp speakers have a tendency to connect to your phone when they are supposed to be turned off in the dock. Then they run the battery down and do not charge in the dock most of the time. The often make lvery loud noises, when the battery is low, which is very pleasant when out camping and sleeping in the back of a R1S.

I'm debating if the camp speaker should stay or if I should replace it with the drawer.

All I can add is that every time I have tried to use it the battery was dead. I have charged it via USB many times but it has never retained a charge while docked long enough to remain functional the next time I tried to use it.

Perhaps I will complain about it next time I am in for service. At a minimum if we all complain they will stop telling people that it is user error.

Camp speaker sits in my night table nicely. I have a drawer installed (way more functional) with a few things on it like my NACS adapter. Perfect place for it :)

Thanks for the info! I think the drawer may replace the speaker.

This! I even RTFB and I’m still unsure. Can’t use just any charger either. Had to bust out a high wattage laptop charger. And when it does work, the buttons seem to be stubborn and only work when they feel like it.

Double check to make sure nothing is in the dock blocking the charge pins. I had a napkin or piece of paper pushed back there blocking the charge. Also beware of the SC, they’ll tell you anything. Complete BS artists that are not there to help you, but to get the truck out of service asap.

Thanks for the info. I did check the charging pins and there was nothing blocking them. They also appeared to be clean. I'll probably use a pencil eraser to try to buff off any that might be on them, too.

Retired from construction.
Had the same happen with mine. I took it to the SC and they did a reboot but it did not fix it. Finally they said it was just dead and not worth replacing. ($500.00). Guess I will look for a drawer and use the speaker at home plugged into a usbc cord. Any recommendations for a good drawer that locks? My truck is just off warranty.

I experienced the same issue with my '22 R1T. Mobile service attempted to fix the charge port unsuccessfully. The service center corrected what mobile service did and also replaced the camp speaker. I haven't had a chance to verify if it is working correctly. Just checked... It is dead.

The Camp Speaker is quirky for sure, and I don't have too many occasions to use it, but when I do, it always works and sounds great. The buttons and lights also are not very intuitive if you ask me.

That being said, if you decide you want to use it, then I think what you heard from Rivian about this is close, but maybe not exactly right. The dock *does* charge the speaker, but occasionally the speaker benefits from/requires a charging session via USB-C. I had to do this last summer after owning my Gen 1 R1T for about 2 years, but once I gave it a USB-C charge I resumed keeping it in the dock and it's worked reliably since then.

In your case, if it's as dead as you describe, I wonder if it might be worth doing a full USB-C charge, then a full discharge, then another full USB-C charge to rejuvenate it?
