"Dad - You SO could have smoked that guy" said my daughter after this happened at a red light where it narrowed to one lane not far on the other side of the intersection. Here's the coal-burner from my left camera (we have a '23 Gen1 R1S Quad so please forgive the image quality):
Rivian R1T R1S "Dad - You SO could have smoked that guy" 1748223080516-9f

13-second video...

You can see that his acceleration caused us and everyone behind us to gag at the smoke plume he created. My favorite thing though was when my other daughter (I have 18 year-old twins) immediately chimed in: "Yes, but then the poor guy's penis would have become even smaller." I almost choked laughing - they get it.

Full disclosure...If my wife hadn't been sitting next to me in the passenger seat it would have been a full launch and the video would have been from the rear camera instead.

Glad your girls get it. That is awesome.

You are pretty safe running most diesels but I’ve encountered some pretty quick ones here in Texas. A company in Houston that made my Ford Excursion diesel pretty quick. Their daily driver shortbed diesel probably would take my R1T in the 1/4. They let me drive it around while working on my truck and I had no issue crushing Vettes and Mustangs a few years ago.

First rule of running anyone is knowing or at least having a good idea, of what your are up against. Definitely some sleepers out there..

I'd race it. If it's safe and someone wants to line up with me, I'll let it go. I only take it up to 60 on roads that have speeds close to 60 anyway. Unless I'm on a freeway onramp, and then I'm not racing anyone; however, I might take it fast above 60, as the speed limit is already faster than that.

When it's a lane ending, I almost always get in front of the other driver by the time we are across the intersection.

Yep. The only time I have put the accelerator all the way to the floor was when idiots rolling coal did this.

The first time I was towing my trailer. I was worth having to pick up things that fell off shelves to see the guy’s depression† (in my side view mirror.)

†I typed “expression” - autocarrot turned it into “depression”, I’m keeping it.

Ha! I did this once against a Challenger R/T. He pulled up next to me on my left and was revving his engine. I knew his intentions: accelerate past me, then change over 2 lanes to exit maybe 1/4 mile ahead. I thought…why not?

The light changed, I heard him gun it, so I did too. 5 seconds later I was at 70+ (speed limit was 55), and he was 1/2 car length behind and had to cut over behind me.

The scary thing is, mine is just a plain-old Dual. Can’t imagine what the quads & performance ones are like, especially in Launch mode.

The wife is definitely the governor of this. I also would have had to let the guy win.

In launch mode this thing is insane. Almost nothing I will ever encounter will beat it. Except a Model S Plaid.

I tell my wife to hold on and she says ok.

then my daughter squeals in delight as she’s forced back into her seat.

Happened yesterday when some dude kept creeping forward at the light nearly into the intersection while his buddy was staring at our family wagon, like I was intimidated or something.

Needless to say, I suspect they both learned a lesson.

Our Tri is scary fast in launch mode. Only did a full launch once at it was 2.97 seconds. Probably won't ever do it again. We've had a handful of fatalities around here the past few years from drag racing.

Drag racing by amateurs is always dangerous. Add in street racing by children not old enough to understand their limits and really bad things happen.

0-60 in 3 seconds is equivalent to about 175 feet.

1320 feet in 11 seconds is about 8 seconds too much on the street, IMO.

I’ve had a few fun moments like that.
One time, a Jeep Trackhawk kept creeping forward and revving at a red light — I could tell he was itching to go. When the light turned green, he launched hard, but I had already figured out his game. I started just a moment later… and still smoked him. 😎

Another time, it was a Cybertruck (not the Cyberbeast)...

Had some fun up against a 2025 Ford Mustang 5.0 GT this weekend. from 100km/hr to....Full Maple Syrup 🍁.... we were dead matched. My SOC was around 65% in my Quad R1T with Nokians AT's.

It was honestly fun, and acknowledged each others greatness once we were both stopped at a light. As most of you know, the party trick of an EV is off the line speed, but that power band starts to fall away (to Mustang GT levels) above 100km/hr.

There was only one other time that I wanted the Gen 2 Quad. This was the second. ;)
