I bought a second hand 2022 R1T Quad Motor Adventure edition with 29k miles. It's got all the goodies, including the power tonneau cover. It has large slats that seem to stack up in the front of the bed...it makes a fair amount of noise as it retracts and deploys but doesn't sound problematic and works great. This car was sold new in August of 2022, so fairly late production for the model year. How can I tell which generation tonneau cover it has, and if I should trying to figure out how to get it updated to the more current one before the warranty expires?

Vehicle production and deliveries started in late 21. Your 22 is considered early production.

Very unlikely Rivian would update yours under warranty unless yours is broken.

The "generations" of power tonneau are confusing, the only generation that is firmly defined is generation 1.

Unfortunately, the "updated gen 1" (some call it gen 2, some 1.5,) looks visibly identical. So it isn't easy to tell if yours was updated or not. Maybe Rivian will tell you? And the updated ones only started rolling out YEARS later, and were only retrofit onto vehicles if the shipped tonneau had broken.

Mine is still working fine.

An August 2022 R1T was one of the first 10,000 produced. Look at the VIN number.

My R1T was made about a month after yours, and I still have the original version 1 powered tonneau. Mine also still works fine, and has never had a problem. I open/close it several times a day.

The warranty is 5 years/60,000 miles, so go ahead and keep using it - if it breaks they will replace it with a newer version.

Technically, yes, but just to employees. There were no significant quantities delivered to customers until March 2022, which was 6 months after the "official" start of production.

It doesn’t matter what “some people” call it. It matters only what Rivian calls their product.

As others have quoted, the version number is confusing because what many refer to as version 3 is what Rivian sells now as V2, their drastically improved roll-up version. What I've seen from online videos (Edmunds or Monroe, I think), the middle version is just a minor update/hack to the original, where they put a stronger leaf spring under the stack, so the slats are pushed up with more force and make them engage better. The slats look the same for the two before the current model; I've heard that the little teeth that the gears engage were strengthened, but it might be a rumor.

My '22 Launch cover broke last week. She had a long run, but it was always super noisy, and I was expecting this break. Service is booked in October because the parts are out of stock at the moment. I'm at 59K miles, so if it breaks again, I'll just get the manual cover. I don't like the stress of worrying if it will break when I'm far from home and have some expensive stuff that I need to hide/cover from theft.

I bought a new R1T Quad Adventure which was built in August 2022 and delivered on September 16, 2022. My Vin is #11,3XX. I believe it came with the same original stock version 1.0 that yours has.

Mine rattled a bit when it operated, but otherwise worked fine until my tailgate button quit working around October 2024. When I called Rivian, they scheduled an appointment on December 20, 2024, and replaced the tonneau with Version #1.5 and added a new tailgate button. It's been working great since then, and I find that it even runs a bit quieter than the original one.

Hope that gives you a better idea of what you have.
