This post has changed my mind. I hope Rivian opens up an optional 2 square inch section of the main display for CarPlay use for those who want it.

In the end this will become another one of those “give us cp/aa” threads irrespective of your myth busting intent.

Since you took the time to do some research. Why not note where the data came from.

Probably Apple documentation of the software development kit. Here is the regular CarPlay documentation, but it looks like ordinary Joes like us don’t get access to the documentation for CarPlay Ultra SDK. OP works in Design Operations for Microsoft.

Microsoft is building a car with CarPlay Ultra!

I agree. Not very impressed with the map system that Rivian currently uses. Rerouting etc....is better with other apps. Messages etc... also would be useful.

OP-I appreciate the insight/opinion. Most of us like CP. The reality is that there will always be something that will be "lacking" in every car made. I never liked the glass roof but it wasn't enough to stop me from buying it. I dont see CP in a Rivian and I'm ok with that.

This is helpful articulation of the AA/CP idea. It does not replace or supplant Rivian's design aesthetic. However, with the VW/JV, it seems to mean that there will be AA/CP support in the code-base that those licensees will get should they choose to display.

As for CP/AA forums, we are here in a Rivian forum talking about this automaker. However, CP/AA controls our driving experiences outside of Rivian. Controls our choices when away from all vehicles. Manages more than the sum of any car manufacturer.

CP/AA can be a 2nd screen or a whole skin or something in-between. but ignore integration and the aftermarket will find a way. They always do.

The overwhelming chaff here is that AA/CP might takeover the Rivian screen and thereby the car controls. I'm not seeing the Rivian design aesthetic as something to be lauded and defended as of yet. We do agree that there is a group willing to actively argue that AA/CP has a place.

Today we are wallflowering on different sides of the same dance hall. We'll eventually have to figure it out or be content alone and sad.

I'm not - and never have been - a fan of the AP GUI. When you blow it up on a larger screen it just looks cheap to me. I had AP in my previous few cars, and since owning the Rivian, I don't really miss it as MOST of the functionality found in AP is available already in the Rivian GUI.

That being said, I'd MUCH rather Rivian spend development time adding features found in AP/GP - (namely texting and calendar support), integrating a better map with ABRP data (ditch MapBox and it's constantly out of date traffic for Apple/Google/Waze Maps). I'd also appreciate if Rivian would stop spending their development cycles on things like creating a more realistic campfire in Camp Mode, wire graphics for the vehicles, or prettying up the Energy App with confusing data.

I get that there's only so much SW Dev time available, but adding features like text messaging with audio support would be greatly appreciated by those who not only own an R1, but will be surprised that's not available in an R2.

Wow these pictures really tell the tale of what an obtrusive, awful mess CarPlay is. (Not as awful as Apple Intelligence, but very close. ) So glad Rivian, GM, VW, Tesla have all jettisoned this. I guess the Financial Times was right yesterday as well: CP Ultra is dead.

I've got a buddy who loves my R1T and wants a Rivian but won't because he's a effing apple phone person who needs it on a $100k+ vehicle.

Phone people can't get over themselves.

I think we can all agree that playing your music from a USB drive would give the best sound/clarity available.
LOL, no, we don't.

I'm surprised that some capricious mod hasn't locked/deleted this thread. Myth #1 is the most stupid one, repeated by Rivian and then the fanboys assumed they weren't lying. But hilariously, just days after the lie, Mini showed their new UI with CP embedded, but NOT TAKING OVER. Duh.

I added CP to my Rivian, because it's 2025 and I shouldn't have to live with the ridiculously bad phone integration it has.

🙄

We all spend a huge amount of our driving time interacting with the vehicle’s infotainment system, so how that system works and what it can do is understandably important to some people. I don’t get the dismissive and condescending attitude toward people for whom Android Auto or CarPlay is part of their buying decision.
