I'm on the R2S reservation list. My wife and I split our time between Pasadena, CA, and Taos, NM. The R2S will be the sole means by which we travel (with our border collie) between the two places. On the reservation list site, I listed my residence as Pasadena, CA, but I wonder whether I shouldn't change that to Taos, NM. My thought is that I might rise in priority on the list if I chose Taos, where Rivian might see an advantage of advertising in a newer market. Pasadena is filled with Rivians. Ultimately, the R2S might be licensed in NM. Thoughts?

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
As we discovered with Gen1 R1 vehicles, priority was given to those near a service center. This was good for both Rivian and early adopters ...

One big decision for when you can (legally) register a vehicle in more than one location is the taxes on the purchase. Some states charge sales tax on vehicles, some don’t. There are also many different sales tax rates. Some states have high vehicle registration fees because they include property tax, while some don’t.

In Kansas, I pay 6.5% sales tax on a vehicle purchase and while the yearly tag fee is only something between $40 and $125 depending upon the type of vehicle (car/motorcycle/truck) and engine type (gas/hybrid/electric), but there’s also property tax. Property tax on my demo 2022 R1T was $950 (would have been significantly higher in 2022) and I expect to pay about $750 for the first year on an R2.

The only thing we know for sure is that owners of R1 vehicles will have priority for R2 deliveries.

IMO it's useless to try to game the system at this point.

They are screwed there. Pasadena has the highest sales tax possible at 10.5%.

I did not know this. Yet another reason to have picked Pasadena as my home site. Thanks. Do you any other advice on how to positively affect my placement in the wait list? (-:

Ooops, hadn't thought about the sales tax difference, but short of moving, there's not much to be done about it.

I have a friend on the list as well. He signed up very early. R1 buyers have priority but it would mean I'd be buying the r2 and then "selling" it to him.

He's got a Forester as well, lol. Lives in La Canada

If gen 2 launch and sales is any indication of current sales model... your place in queue might not matter as much as you think. Current model appears to be one that funnel and encourage buyers to pre-existing inventory. For those who are not flexible with options, custom order/config is the only path. And their place in that line has more to do with how the "stars" align—a combination of their order placement date, their proximity to a SC, and whether their config aligns with Rivian's production batching per any given run (i.e. predictive match). Once the "doors" open, I predict reservation holders will be invited to either browse and buy from Shop, or make their custom config selections (and wait some more).

Want to jump the line, even ahead of existing R1 owners?
  • Become a Rivian employee (and have whatever status that gets you ahead of other employees). Probably missed the boat on this already.
  • Or, sarcastically and bitterly, become a social influencer with a very large following.

You can rent a UPS Store box near a service center in a state with fewer Rivians and lower taxes. Unlike PO Boxes, UPS Store addresses count as physical addresses. YMMV.

Sage advice, both, but my possible social influencing days have passed and I'm too tied to CA and NM at this point to move in order to save a few thousand. Now, if it would move me higher up in the queue, I'd call the moving company tomorrow.

In NM you will pay 4% sales tax on a new car and registration is about $54 a year with a 5% discount for a 2 year reg. Plus you can have a red and green chile license plate for no extra cost !!! I live in Corrales, NM and have a house in LA but most 90% of my income is generated in NM and I pay both NM and CA state income taxes. You will end up picking up the R2 in Scottsdale or Denver with a transit permit and everything should be paid up upon purchase pick up. Do not try to pick up the R2 in CA. if you will register it in NM. CA does not allow a transit permits and you will pay CA sales tax. Also Kit Carson Electric may have some perks for EVs. PNM gave me a $500 credit for a charger and I have a 3 cent, 10pm to 5 am EV rate for charging. Fill 'er up for less than 4 bucks.

p.s. don't sweat getting an early model. Best to get the EV about a year out when most of the kinks are worked out. All 3 of my EVs have late first year VINs and are for the most part well built.

Well, this changes things. Will this work? I'm gonna leave Pasadena as my home location for purposes of the wait list. I have always planned to get the R2 in 2027, for the reason mentioned in the last post.

But, what I should do is take delivery in Denver, get the permit you mention and drive the car to Taos and register it in NM. I have a Chevy Bolt, purchased in Santa Fe and registered in NM (I like the black plate with red and green chiles).

My questions are: 1. Will Rivian be unhappy if I have listed my location as Pasadena on the wait list but then request delivery in Denver? 2. Do I pay any sales tax in CO when I take delivery there? 3. What about the first post that mentions no out of state purchases?
