Purchasing Questions: Distribution center transfer fee and plate transfer

I’m in the process of trading in my 2022 R1T for the new Quad Max and had a couple questions for the forum:

1) What’s the “Distribution Transfer Fee?” I imagine that being a shipping charge on inventory or used vehicles that are purchased, but the destination fee is supposed to cover delivery fees on new vehicles.

2) Have people had luck transferring a plate to a new truck - particularly in Arizona. These are the conflicting responses I received.

In Arizona I was not able to transfer my Tesla plate to the R1T. The reason explained to me was we were leasing the vehicle (then immediately purchasing to get $7500 tax credit). However, in that interim period of a few weeks the leasing company owned the car. In AZ plates stay with the owner. Also be aware in AZ all Rivians come through Tempe as a "dealer" so the sales tax is Temp 8.1%. However, if you purchase the lease, the car is then registered at your address and the sales tax for that transaction will be your address. For us that was a good thing since we live in Navajo county, in the forest with no city tax. Saved us about $900 on the lease purchase compared to Tempe sales tax rate.

Distribution fee - I believe this is when the vehicle was delivered to a Rivian location to be sold locally, but is now being shipped again you Tempe, AZ for you. When buying from inventory you see this on some depending upon where the vehicle is located. Those with no fee are either locally available or sitting at the factory.

It may have been due to a highly motivated end of quarter environment, but Rivian waived my $1,600 transfer fee from Las Vegas to the east coast for my end of June delivery. I simply asked and they accepted without much hesitation.

The $1800 destination fee covers the original shipment of the vehicle to its intended center. The transfer covers the second move. Your vehicle must be coming from somewhere other than Normal.

In Arizona I was not able to transfer my Tesla plate to the R1T.

Had the same issue back in 2022. Was unable to transfer plate from Model S to R1T because vehicle had to be the same type - i.e., sedan to truck was not allowed.

This is EV Truck to EV Truck so it should be possible. I just find the conflicting responses from the same place annoying and confusing

Yeah, that was it. I guess I got matched to a truck en route to CA and they were going to charge additional to move it to AZ.

I complained and got it waved. My sales representative said, “It’s a Launch Edition and everything should be included” and he removed the fee.

Will see how this plate transfer works out.

I originally wanted Launch Green but I just couldn’t do a dark interior in the Sonoran desert. Also found Launch Green and Laguna Blue accents a poor match. Rivian should have stayed with yellow accents IMO.

Well, in case anyone has this question in the future, looks like the AZ plate transfer will go through:

I apologize for the confusion on the plate transfer. I didn't see any notes but I did follow up with our title and registration team to clarify and confirm we were able to approve that plate transfer. As for that title and registration fee, you will get a refund check after we process the transfer based off the difference from what is remaining on your current registration.
