Interesting video about what it takes to design a new vehicle. I’m sure a lot applies to Rivian’s processes

Recently had a chance to spend bit of time with Gravity at their Fashion Island showroom.

It was much smaller than the image would imply and the inside looks and feels very nice. Very different feel than R1S and R2.

The seats have much more bolstering for lateral support and hugs you, unlike R1 seats where it feels almost like an individual bench seat. It is much tighter feel than R1 width-wise inside. The 2nd row leg room looks like bit more than R1 with the seat position all the way back leaving chopped off knees for the 3rd row passengers. The 2nd row seats definitely lacked the attention of the driver's row and looks plain and bit too simple. Rivian 2nd row seats are much nicer.

The 3rd row is an option for Gravity and one can get with or without. It fold in the equivalent space of the compact spare is in the R1. The folding remained me of a minivan. Still, once folded, there is a flat floor all the way to the drivers's row (with 2nd row seat folded).

Walking around the vehicle, the fit and finish looked great but it is a showroom sample so who knows what's delivered. Also it definitely felt boulevard cruiser SUV and not off-road SUV. Kind a like how no one sees Lyric off roading. Gravity is in the same boat.

The use case I see for Gravity is, intended or not, replacement for Air so that one can have more space and cargo carrying capabilities. It is a very nice vehicle and will be competing in a high priced market segment so I think its pretty tough competition against Range Rovers, BMW, MB eSUV.

The way it's priced, one can almost buy two base R2 for a price of one Gravity decently equipped so definitely addressing a different segment. I do not believe great number of people would cross shop R1 and Gravity as soon as they actually see the differences. Each are focused on a different audience.

Do you plant to leave pavement? If no, then Gravity. If Yes, then R1S.

That's the decision tree between them.

Actually for many of us in Socal, it not leaving the pavement as much as do we goto the mountains in the winter for skiing/snowboarding. Need occasional non-pavement use.

Yeah, I agree. I was implying that use case as well.
