EV Play + Comma 3x install - advice

I’m going for it this weekend. I will be installing both EV Play and Comma 3x (Comma.ai Rivian A harness).

Anyone else who has both, what, if anything, should I be on the lookout for that’s different from installing just one or the other?

For the Comma 3x, I’m thinking about doing the longitudinal upgrade later. At £349 the comma.ai harness variant is pretty steep considering Comma 3x + harness is $1000.

Should I put off the install until I have the upgrade kit or is installing it down the road (so to speak) the same effort? @gerrylum, @LivingInKaos

If you buy the harness AND the upgrade from Lukas, he gives a discount that makes it a bit cheaper than getting the harness from Comma. It's still expensive, but the upgrade is well worth it, in my opinion.

There's no reason to put off the install. Adding the upgrade kit later is EXTREMELY easy. Adding the dongle to the harness takes about five minutes. It takes longer to route the additional USB cable up to the Comma.

Looks like you got it all sorted without me . Something it looks like Gerry might have forget to mention is if you get both from Lukas, his harness has the axm power already disconnected, so all you need to do is add a fuse tap. With the comma harness, you have to modify it to isolate the axm power. It's believed that this helps to reduce the random errors some are seeing.

Oh sh*t. I am reading this because I am about to do the same thing. I thought that to isolate the power with the Lukas harness you had to pull the purple wires out and connect them? I already did that in preparation. Did I mess up?

When did you get your harness from Lukas? The newer ones already have the power isolated, but the older ones don't. I assume that since you had wires in those locations, it was an older version. I'm not positive when that change was exactly implemented. @gerrylum likely can complete this response

Not necessarily. If you got one of Lukas' harnesses before he removed the power connection, then you did exactly what you were supposed to do. He only started shipping harnesses without the power connection recently.

Lukas had a purple 12v connection, Comma uses red wires for their 12v connection.

Thanks for sharing the installation tips doc. I wish I had come across that doc before and understood the Lukas harness discount. The Lukas harness sounds simpler and cleaner. I wanted to avoid OBD as power source after some OBD related drama with SOS/TCM and the local service center.

You can still use the fuse tap method with the Comma harness. It should have the same Molex connector that the OBD power uses.

Ok, great. Fuse taps are new to me. Is that something I can grab at an auto parts store, Harbor Freight or presumably Amazon? LMK if you have a link. I’ll watch the video and look at what size fuse is needed.
