How is this possible. My Garmin Epic Gen 2 has both NFC and bluetooth which is what Apple Wallet Key uses and the Apple Watch. And the Garmin watch connects to my iPhone so all the needed tech appears to be there.
You're missing UWB.

Yep. But both Garmin watches and Apple Watch 9 and later have UWB. So not sure why Rivian doesn’t use Garmin watches as well.
I think you may be mistaken. According to Garmin, the epix Gen 2 doesn't have UWB capability. This is a core reason Garmin aren't supported.

I'm sorta dumb, so forgive me. Why can't Rivian just mimic the passive entry the key cards allow via NFC, but via a Garmin watch under its tap to pay feature, or some alternative under that affords the same use.

Would much prefer having my Garmin as a back up "Rivian wrist band" considering my Garmin lasts weeks on a charge and is on me anytime I'm awake. I don't need it to tell me all the stats etc. Just give me the ability to unlock and drive the same way the cards do.

They likely could, but would incur additional development costs. The beauty of the key and wallet frameworks developed by others is that the development is already done for the most part. The downfall is that you are limited by their chosen integrations.

Just noticed Garmin has released their LTE version. So awesome. I am highly likely going to replace my Fenix 7X with one of these.

This will allow me to go running without my phone. If only I could use it to open my Rivian.

Apple Car Key isn't just "NFC and Bluetooth" - it's an API with back-end support that requires work from both Apple and the carmaker. Garmin would need to specifically add support - and Apple would need to support that.

Again, obvious answer is Garmin's miniscule marketshare. Supply & demand. Same reason no independent developer has offered a worked around by tapping into APIs. Why would any, unless personally vested, spend the time & effort with little ROI from, at best, 10-11% of all smartwatch wearers? Even the developer for WatchOS WAAK has gone AWOL.

What about for us non watch people? Skin grafted all in one NFC UWB chip should be an option.

Jk lol *cries in gen 1*
Retinal scan via Gen 1 mirror cameras. <1% accuracy, the rest are just false positives.

It's funny because I was glancing over the Micro LED version last night. something like 4500 nit display, LTE and SAT connectivity, but the battery life compared to my 7X sapphire takes a massive hit.

Yeah, I can't handle the battery life of the Micro LED version when my 7X can go weeks without charging. The battery life is much better on the AMOLED version so that's the one I would get.

But I noticed it is missing another feature: the built in flashlight. When I got my 7X I thought it was a useless feature. Nope. I use it several times a day. It's amazing having extra light whenever you want it. Now THAT might keep me from upgrading.

Edit: I was wrong. It does have the flashlight!

Still no UWB.
I searched the site for UWB and no Garmin device appears to have it.

Yep, which pretty much rules it out from ever getting WaaK.

Same on the flashlight function. I sold two friends on the Fenix 7X and Epic just on battery life and flashlight functionality. I use mine at least once a day normally, when camping, that's where the feature ..... really shines!

My wife is usually in bed before me, and instead of jamming my toes on something I click on my watch flashlight. In a restaurant with poor lighting? Watch flashlight! I love it.
