Rivian Smart Charging Arrives in Next OTA Software Update

Hopefully this will allow us to set different schedules for weekday vs. weekend charging. Also it will hopefully also allow us to have multiple time periods per day for charging. For example - my lowest rates occur from Midnight-6am, and 10am-2pm.

Neither of those things are able to be scheduled today with Rivian's manual scheduled charging. Why? Who knows? Many other much cheaper vehicles have multiple charging schedules that you can configure.

I use Weavegrid with my Tesla.

If Rivian's implementation is similar, it will require active participation from your utility as well. Or Rivian might be doing something different.

I posted on reddit, but I wish this can be setup to talk to my solar and only charge on excess (adjust charging rate) I dont want to shell out money on an OCPP charger for this.

You shouldn't need to. The point of Weavegrid integrations is to eliminate the need for a smart charger.

The downside (at least in the Tesla implementation) is that your utility needs to be working with Weavegrid as well.

So will I be able to set charging schedule on the rivian wall charger itself. So if I have relatives/friends over they can plug in without it automatically charging at peak. Because it sucks having them over and having to wake up at 12 am (off peak)to plug in.

Looks like a safe bet on the weekend vs week day but will cross my fingers for you with the multiple times slots per day, that seems less likely.

IIRC, Rivian considers Friday a weekend...

Nice to know this feature is available. I’m thankful we currently don’t have to worry about charging during specific time slots. Our municipal utility we pay one rate 7x24. There is a small $0.01/kWh bump after the first 1000kWh.

Thirteen years ago, I made everyday a weekend and never looked back. The grass is greener and the air smells sweeter. I highly recommend it. I quit the rat race while I was still young enough to enjoy a lot that I wasn’t able to.
