Does "Waiting for Charger" stress the 12V?

I have a Chargepoint Home Flex, hardwired on a 60A circuit. I also have an electricity supplier that gives a rebate for EV charging between 11:00PM and 6:00AM. We use it to charge my Gen 1 R1S and my wife's BMW i4, and have been controlling the schedule through the cars' settings, not the Chargepoint.

Yesterday morning I noticed that my R1S did not complete charging overnight, and saw that charging was limited to 3.6KW in the session. I have narrowed it down to this: If the Rivian charging schedule is on, the current is limited to 16A when charging begins. If the schedule is off, it goes to 48A. Last night I woke up at 4:00AM, saw that it was charging at 3.6KW, turned off the schedule in the app, and observed that the rate immediately went to 11KW.

So tonight I wanted to try controlling the schedule through the Chargepoint. But I noticed that the car displays the message "Waiting for Charger" when I plugged it in after enabling the Chargepoint schedule. And that got me wondering of the car stays awake the entire time waiting for the current to start flowing? Does that stress out the 12V system?

I also noticed that the Charpoint app says the Flex was updated on 9/20. The conspiracy theorist in me wonders if my electric supplier made a deal with them to limit the KWH I can use overnight.

1. I would check your scheduler on the Rivian. Both in the car and on the app. Make sure amps set to 48.
2. Great question about the "waiting for charger" and the 12V. I plug in for a few hours before it starts to charge at midnight. Is it awake the whole time?

Prompted by this question, I plugged my Home Flex into my vehicle. The Rivian app now shows the vehicle is asleep even though the vehicle is waiting for the EVSE.

FWIW, I've never used the scheduling function in the Rivian and only use the scheduling function in the ChargePoint app. To my knowledge, the EVSE has aways transferred energy at the rate set in the ChargePoint app, unless I've limited that rate in the Rivian settings.

I never set the schedule in the Rivian and set it instead in the charger. My thought is, as a general rule, I DO NOT want to charge when it's surge pricing from the electric company. With 2 EVs in the house, I can ensure the issue is monitored at the charger and if we want to over-ride it and pay the higher rate for some reason, we can do so through the charger app..

I don't know if the truck will sleep when waiting for charger and haven't really given it much thought.

If you can set the schedule on your charger, it’s the way to go. This way it applies to all cars you charge. And, it’s less likely to have these settings adjusted/reset unknowingly with car software updates.

When the Rivian "sleeps", its sleeping, not dead. In sleep it's still doing lots of stuff. Gary may be on security duty. LTE is waiting for your phone to connect. If PAK is on, then Bluetooth is waiting for you to walk away or get near..... and so on. A charging session starts with communication between your charger and the R1. Both can start a communication session. So, yes the R1 will respond to communication from the charger, and as necessary wake up the appropriate components of the R1 is being asked to start charging. Other components will sleep. As for does this stress the LVB ... lots of threads and opinions on that.
