I know a few Rivian 'collision centers' that would benefit from this advice One of the reasons they pulled compass yellow was how hard it was to color match - every batch was a tiny bit different.




Also - I hate to be the bearer of bad news - Purple is only acceptable on 911's - I don't make the rules (honest!) but thats just the way it is.

It’s not the color that causes it to be difficult to blend. Chemically you can make the paint identical every single time, but other factors could enter into play that make matching after a collision difficult.

For example in your image, it looks like the nozzle was clogged, the paint was mixed incorrectly, there wasn’t enough thinner, or it was applied incorrectly. Any one of those factors or a combination of them cause that grainy look on a car with heavy metal flake.

Another thing could be how susceptible the color is to UV fading. That’s not what caused the mismatch in your image, but it’s a common problem. Basically the sun changes the color of the paint to where the original color is a different shade. There are things that can be done to mitigate this, many paint shops have a laser they can shoot at your paint that will give a color code to match what that color is.

The tl;dr is you can start with identical paint but if you have someone who doesn’t know what they are doing it will not match. I’ve painted a lot of cars, and I’m by no means an expert, but I’ve gotten to watch several people who are. Getting the exact color match for any color is the easy part. Applying it to match what’s there is an art. That’s true of any color though, and more so with metallic or pearlescent colors.

It is for the dual standard

That has nothing to do with this new color - Forest Green has been the only "not grayscale" color for Dual Standard for a while. Red and Blue were both removed from Dual Standard some time ago.

Well, let’s see how many Rivian sells of this color. I’m not sure what “limited” means in terms of quantity. But I’d say under 100 will get sold.

I think the Dune (which we own and love) has taught Rivian a lesson about special editions. It took them far longer than they anticipated to sell those 1,000 units and they ended up discounting the last of them. These are going to be smaller runs I bet and they seem to be using many fewer custom parts. Dune has custom seats, floors, and wheels in addition to paint and badging. These seem to be limited to custom paint/badging and small post-factory upfit items in the case of the Miami edition.

I was playing with the configurator, you cannot get the slate sky interior with the purple. That's disappointing.

I found it interesting that my wife likes the purple. No chance for me. Come on Rivian - we need an orange special edition - so many manufacturers have done that. I would upgrade in a NY minute for orange.

If you're so upset about not getting your color choice on the BASE option (which usually is missing special colors and options across the auto industry), there's a really simple option. Wrap it. Should still be cheaper than getting the higher spec dual.

Well fortunately for you the "timeless" color of white, black, and 50 shades of gray are available on every car.

I still like my Rivian Blue the best, but Borealis would be my second choice. I really hope we continue to get some real color choices for the R2.

I’m sure they’ll make some limited editions in the future, but for now they’re going to produce what sells the most. Unfortunately in the US that’s: white, black, gray, silver, and blue. I’m hoping forest green and a new shade of red make an appearance.

If all that's on the lot is black, white, gray, (and blue-tinted gray, green-tinted gray, etc.), then that's what's going to sell most. If a manufacturer advertises yellow, then none of the dealers will order that (or maybe just 1 for the novelty) because they only care about selling cars quickly. Then if the manufacturer only gets a few orders from dealers for that color, that color gets dropped early in the model year.

By the time the consumer gets to choose, it's almost back to the days of Henry Ford - we can get any color we want as long as it's black, white, or gray. I don't believe that the color options we see on the dealer lot reflect consumer choice.

Never a desirable option for me, even if available when I purchased mine. Absolutely a hard pass without any hesitation, mental reservation, or purpose of evasion.
