Gotta love how they use Gen1 adopters for data collection and then leave us behind with nothing to show for it but a high-latency Siri clone as consolation.

Expected, and yet still disappointing. Bring back Compass Yellow and I might consider upgrading.

Maybe, but they are demonstrating a new way for the company to make money, and improve their chances of success in the automobile market.

Not only will they be one of the leaders in the industry, they will be able to do it inexpensively (relatively). The legacy car companies are not able to match this cost structure. I suspect only Tesla can. (And maybe the Chinese start-ups, but they cheat and lie about everything so who knows what they really can do at scale.)

$50 a month is a good revenue stream.
Down 7%. If the market had any sanity, Tesla would be off 80% on this. What Rivian has shown is that any OEM can (and many are) lapping Tesla on autonomy and AI and most especially on the hardware stack.

Good to watch and hear. Great things on the way at Rivian. As many others on here. Even though my gen 1 can’t do a lot of things mentioned I am excited to be involved with this company and look forward to my wife getting her R2 in 2027!

That's true for some people. There will always be some people that need the latest & greatest thing.

The type of person that keeps a car for ~10 years doesn't really care. Neither do the people who don't care to pay some subscription fee for self-driving whatever.

With Tesla's uptake of FSD reportedly in the ~15% range, I'm skeptical this is a market that will have mass consumer adoption without dramatically lower prices. Tesla consumers are among the most tech-interested of any brand.
They aren't really "tech-interested" as much as "hype-interested" or in a lot of cases "Tesla-Stock-Price-Interested"

“Gen 3 Autonomy hardware including ACM3 and LiDAR is currently undergoing validation and we expect it to ship on R2 models starting at the end of 2026.”

so a reason not to buy an R2 early on? That could be really bad for the unveiling where strong sales are needed most

Could the audience be more of a dud? Jeez
All the AI terminology is going over their heads! /jk

TBF, they did a good job on the explanations simplifying things. It was more Apple style than car company.

Some legacy brands have much better level 3 and 4 tech already and just have not implemented. BMW and MB have had Full hands-off driving for over 10 years, capable of even being driven on race tracks. And many brands have LiDar already implemented. This technology is not new to the industry, just new to Rivian.

Liability is going to be the biggest hurdle.
I was not aware that BMW or MB has enabled full hands-free driving in the US. When did they do that?

The last I saw, GM had the best hands-free driving (of the legacy companies), and even that is limited. It is true Rivian is playing catch up right now, but they appear to be poised to be much better much faster.

I am skeptical that any legacy car company has the level of integration that Rivian demonstrated, but I have not been following BMW's or MB's progress on this.

RJ just killed off R1. R2 is gen 3 including LiDAR and Rivian developed AI chip.

This is exactly the reason holding onto EVs for more than 3~5 yrs is just like computers - outdated.

Just as I've said before these vehicles are laptop with wheels and cannot place ICE paradigm onto EVs.
I mean… My wife doesn't even use basic cruise control, much less Driver+. So these new features mean nothing to her.

I think Rivian has made great progress in autonomy. But I am not sure if this secures Rivian’s future. It might have actually helped speed up commoditizing self driving cars, and paradoxically, make owning cars obsolete.

Unless Rivian will be a major fleet provider of self driving cars, they might have given people less reason to buy cars in the future.

I think you missed the point, on a Tesla I am not talking about FSD. This is the basic autopilot that G2 will have to pay $50 for. LOL

Autonomy + on a G2 car will work like regular autopilot not FSD. That will be restricted to G3 models.. Clearly it went over your heads.
I got the impression Autonomy + was G3, eye's off. Everyone on G2 was getting the expanded roads, hands off capabilities for free. I could be wrong and will wait for what's officially posted by Rivian.

How does it even work with R2 sales? Why would you buy a gen 1 R2 that is going to be obsolete in less than 12 months? I swear Rivian is their own worst enemy as usual.
