Absolutely. If I were allowed to trade, I’d be snapping up Rivian shares before legacy automakers start trying to take it over. VW should pounce.
Getting your Rivian shares converted to VW shares isn’t the win you think it might be

Easy to say until you're dog tired heading home from an adventure, or not feeling well, or sleepy, and your robot on wheels takes you door-to-door without you giving 2FKs about anything. Welcome to the future...now.
Considering I do that now anyway, you can't miss what you never had. Honestly, I do have AI Privacy concerns anyway, so I'm on the fence. My R2 reservation wasn't made until this past March so I probably wasn't getting it until late 2026 or 2027 anyway. Though if I get moved up because they launch without lidar, may as well get it. By the time I get a new car all the autonomy stuff should be ironed out and some other future stuff will probably be added. Maybe robotaxi's will be a thing. Who knows.

Or, if you want to be insulated from the rapid decrease in resale value due to it having “old tech”, which is more my thinking.

I’m not that concerned with most of the features, but I’d hate to have bought one for $80k, only to learn it’s worth less than half because it can’t support <insert latest technology here>.
When I buy a car, I just assume all the money is gone. I'm not buying with the thought of reselling some day. Who know what will happen between the day I buy it and if I will get into a car destroying accident where nothing can be saved. The money its worth is useless to me until 8-10 years later anyway. I cannot guess what state of the economy will be then. Best to pretend you aren't getting the money back, not take it into account and make my financial decisions from there. That way, best case scenario, I have thousands when I do sell it.

Finally got around to watching it, a good technical overview of what was going behind the curtains. Won't repeat what most people have said already, but there were two subtle details that caught my attention that I did not see mentioned else where:
  • RJ mentions the autonomy to "pursue opportunities in the ride share space." I wonder who could they be partnering with or if they have ambitions to roll out their own?
  • Vidya mentions Rivan expects their compute platform to be the most powerful in consumer vehicles in "North America" in late 2026. Seems like they know, or couldn't claim, most powerful in the world most likely because of EVs in China.

I would not be surprised if BMW or MB have more compute. Especially since the iX3 is shipping with zonal architecture, street and highway autopilot. Also the R2 will be out before the iX3 in NA.

My money is on Lyft. They're dead in the water if they don't latch on to someone's self-driving platform.

I’m on an autonomy thread about Rivian, not GM/ Ford. I don’t give a rats ass about them
What about just one furry cheek? Surely you can give half a rats ass...
