I always thought the lightning would be good for plumbing and HVAC companies that service less than 100 miles/day. No oil changes, don’t have to give out gas cards, etc..but I was wrong so who knows what market exists for full-size EV trucks.
Except those tool trucks are often F250/350 class needing 180+ kWh battery that is harder to get fully charged overnight. Then there is the perception of reliability. They know what it takes to keep a petrol vehicle running and are too busy with their trade to learn something new. Nobody is going to beat the competition for having a fleet of EV trucks. Maybe in time but not now.

Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.
It’s a shame. At one point Ford was an investor in Rivian, looking toward the future.

An EREV isn’t a terrible idea, but it seems like a half measure. Scout will be an EREV, too. This gives Rivian the opportunity to make the small $35K truck that Ford couldn’t. Call it the R2T and sell it globally.

Rivian has to be a global brand to survive. The R2 will be sold in Europe where EV adoption is growing more quickly than the US. I bet Rivian exports more R3s to Europe than they sell domestically.

Ford is still launching their next-gen EV platform with the small truck unless there's some other news I missed.

I suspect a big factor killing the Lightning is that it doesn't share much in common with the new platform. There isn't much room for cost improvement and economies of scale if the Lightning doesn't share common components and design with their new models.

I think the EREV's will be a dead end. Some people will buy them, but it will be in the tens-of-thousands a year. They'll never have the economies of scale to turn them into a real business.

Scout is also releasing BEV versions of both of their introductory models in addition to the EREV.

The T3 is dead.

“Scout Motors is expected to initially focus on selling extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) instead of fully electric models due to higher consumer demand for the former. This decision aligns with current market trends and aims to address concerns about range anxiety among potential buyers.”

I’m ok with EREVs on Trucks based vehicles if they can make it work as promised. Everything else including SUVs pure electric. Otherwise just buy an ICE car. You would think if you can afford a $80k vehicle, you probably own a home. So you could charge your vehicle overnight.

But vehicle charging becomes an obstacle when Roughly ~14% of U.S. households live in apartments (apartment/condo buildings). With a 34% total USA population renting. 2 or 3 chargers in a parking lot won’t help. And after working in 8-12 hour shift , the last thing you want is to sit and charger for 30-40 min when you have kids at home and need to make dinner, ect…

There not one size fit all Ever in life. There is a need for diesel , gas, natural 🌱 gas, electric, and hydrogen.

Yeah, the other thing about apartment chargers is that they’re almost always Level 2, not DC fast chargers. That’s going to take several hours, not minutes. Then there’s the problem of someone parking there and forgetting about anyone else needing to charge. This even happens at DC fast chargers.

We need abundant charging infrastructure all over the country, including Level 2 and 3 chargers. You would think in 2025 that electricity would be something that’s not difficult to provide to people.

RAM, SCOUT , F150..I will believe in erev when I see one
My Chevy Volt is an EREV, and it's been a nice introduction into an electrified vehicle over the past five years. While I'd prefer an R3X nowadays, I do think that EREVs have their place in helping shift people over to BEVs.

I have an issue with the thinking of “helping shift people over to EVs” if it is better for you, it will naturally happen. Forcing anyone will only create a backlash. No one , likes to be told what to do.

just like everyone shifted from horses to vehicles. It eventually happen, once they started building roads. But if you look around the world, there are still need for horses in certain situations. Even in big cities like NY police and parks…..

if you still skeptical, just ask “buddy the elf” 😂

I might be misinterpreting that article because it is a bit confusing. Or Ford's communications are confusing.

They talk about the T3 being cancelled to go all in on their Universal EV Platform.

I was under the impression a light truck was one of the first products to come out of the Universal EV platform.

I think the T3 is completely different than the truck on the Universal EV Platform, but I could be misinterpreting that.
