My Mach-e had a keypad on the door which was amazingly useful especially when something like this happens. That door keypad is a Ford thing, and I really miss it.
Subaru has a great feature where the rear gate button can be used to unlock the car with a code. You program a 5 digit code, and then to unlock you tap the button 3 times for 3, 7 times for 7, etc. for all five digits, then the car unlocks. Super simple and effective. I wonder if that is somehow patented, because it’s a no brainer to include in pretty much every car.

Probably because 99% of buyers wouldn't use it because either they didn't know about it, or they would not be bothered with programming and remembering a code. I am the 1%, as are you. LOL.

Rivian could do something similar with the driver side door handle. Each pull would be like a press on the hatch button. Or use the frunk button. The gear tunnel button would work also.

On a side note, pressing the door open button three times could be used to unlock all the doors. That would be very useful for me.

I have a hunch you’re right! 😁

I will add: if the Apple Watch functionality proves reliable over the coming months, that solves the problem for me, as I always have mine on.

This only works if you have a key outside the truck. The problem is if you walk away leaving your phone in the truck, it auto locks and you have no backup key on your person. Waking it won't help.

I have walked away from my truck without my phone more times than I can count. Luckily I remember very quickly and return before it locks. And I do have the card key in my wallet. I can see the day when I leave my phone and wallet in the truck and it locks me out.

Yeah, This leaving the phone in the car and not being able to use the watch has happened to me too. Again, the force awakening (I agree SW reference) allows the watch to work and also can help use the keycard to work as well. There is the path of crawling through the now open trunk to get to the main screen and opening the doors there as well but that takes a bit of gymnastics.
