Residual is at least $10K more than what I can get on the used market. I will have to pay $2k in overage, but that is still an $8K difference. I am super happy with it, but I don't want to take that hit.

If I buy a used R1S, I will definitely get an extended warranty as I drive 22k miles a year and will blow through any original warranty.

My biggest reason for asking about the 22s, is will I notice any differences from my late model Gen 1? I know some suspension items were changed over the run of Gen 1"s, will this be noticeable?
$8k (less after you figure sales tax, reg fees etc) may be wholly worthwhile to keep a vehicle you like and trust that has no unknown issues…

That is not very smart of them. They could sell it to you for less than the residual but more than they can get by keeping it. Even if they sell it to you for the same amount as they would get keeping it they don't have to hold onto it. Seems like the time value of money would be worth it to them to just get rid of it as quickly as possible.

Good to know about that though. I thought I might give it a shot so now I know it is unlikely to work. I am going to want a Gen3 anyway.
It might not “make sense” financially, but that’s how leases work. If the number went the other way and they buyout was below market value, then they couldn’t ask you for more $$ to meet in the middle

I already have ~51k miles on my 24 R1S - lease is ending Jan 2027. I know i will pay overage charges. Not sure if i want to limit driving it, but most likely thats whats going to happen rest of the year.

have a R2 reservation as well.

wife doesn't like the lack of captain's chairs option, so purchasing it maybe out of question, but if R2 is good, we may consider purchasing it.

Long shot, but hope there are some decent incentives for current owners to 'upgrade' to R2.. will see.

Buying out the lease will be the same as buying another used vehicle. Same taxes and reg fees, etc. I do know this vehicle which does have value, but paying a $8k premium to be out of warranty in a year anyway doesn't make sense when I can buy a used one with half the miles or even less. There are many 2023s with under 20k miles on the market right now, and probably more coming in the next 2 months.

My sales contact told me that pics of the pre-owned vehicles on Rivian's website are on cars.com. Just search on the VIN. I very much didn't know that!

I'm turning in my 24 R1S quad next week.
Was on a 2-year lease 24k miles, will turn-in with 19k miles, the car in pristine conditions.
Did the Chase pre-inspection and got Autograde 4.9 out of 5, the inspector was quite surprised.
Residual is $71k, Chase don't want to negotiate, and Rivian is not offering anything special to get into a Gen2 lease. Actually, they just raised the leases last week.
