How long do you plan to keep your current Rivian?

Vehicles depreciate the longer you have them and the more miles you put on them. This is especially true with EVs because there’s not a ton of data on battery replacement costs (although it’s becoming cheaper year-by-year), battery chemistry advancements/breakthroughs (like sodium-ion or solid state), and the demand/feasibility of autonomous driving and AI features requiring more and more powerful hardware for computing.

Until this stabilizes I’m leasing. If it stabilizes while I’m leasing I will buy out the lease. Always make sure you have this option and that the residual value is not above the market value when it’s time to buy. If it is, you can always walk away.

My lease is up towards the end of the year. Was planning on getting the R2 but I love the size of the R1S. I can’t see myself loosing the space. Beyond that point, I’ll hold onto it until I move to Italy in the coming years.

Trading my LE R1T for R2 LE. Then probably trading the R2 in for R3X.

We'll probably keep the R1S LE until it starts to be less reliable. The gen2 R1S is a lease, and it'll go back when the lease is up and likely not be replaced.

That's my plan as of now. Lease the R2 until the R3 is available.

I often hear people say they loved their Gen1 Rivian especially R1T. I wonder why? Gen1 vehicles were better built, or better sound system? Any Gen2 owners want to keep their Gen2s for the long haul?

Mine has been super reliable but the rattles and half shaft and suspension noise issues on my early build have kept me from being fully satisfied so moving to an R2 for the simplified suspension and build.

Historically, I usually keep my vehicles until either 80k-ish miles, or 5~6 years. I usually stagger the replacement cycle so that we don't end up with multiple new cars in a very short period of time. I just got my weekend 2-seater sports car in late 2025, and my daily driver Model 3 is on-deck for replacement, so at least another couple of years of R1S for us (2027~2028).

For EVs, my feeling is that the vehicle in general will be changed sooner. I guess it has more to do with the pace of both technologies and features improves so much more.

So we replace any one of our vehicles every 2~3 years, just not the same vehicle.

Keeping my LE Gen1 quad R1S hopefully "forever" and using as a home battery back-up with V2H and occasional driving when a large vehicle is needed. This is my first and only SUV. I think I'm just more of a hatchback daily guy, so I may eventually get the R3X. I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience at approximately 75k miles and 2.5 years. If I keep this pace, that would be 300k miles at 10 years, which I think is a nice goal.

I have a lot of faith in these Bosch motors, and my battery is still in great heath. I am considering adding a more analog manual sports car to my garage to compliment the Rivian. Honestly, there is nothing else I could buy now or likely in the next 5 years new under $100k with better performance and features.

I absolutely love my Gen 1 R1T. We have 68k miles on it. We're also planning on getting an R2 - it is more suited to our use case. Urban driving mostly.

I'd love to keep the truck too, but have concerns mostly around the air suspension.Does anyone share those concerns or any others that would affect longevity?

I'm keeping mine as long as it makes sense as I'm out of warranty at 60k.
RE: suspension. I got the gen 2 dampers, asked the tech about the air suspension. He said the leaky gen 1 dampers are the problem, seen very few air bags failures. That gives me hope and some confidence.

My Gen 1 R1T is my first EV. So far, I absolutely love it. It’s a 3 year lease that is up in August ‘27. If they offer a deal that I just can’t pass up, I’ll grab a Gen 2 T. Other than that, I’ll be hoping the R3X is released by the time my lease is up.

My 2010 Avalanche has 185,000 miles on it. Planning on similar for the R1S. My main concern is the air suspension. I'll probably take out a service contract (I normally do not believe in them). I believe in getting the most value/return out of a vehicle which means the longer you keep it, the lower the purchase cost per year.

I generally keep my vehicles at least until I pay them off (4-5 years), but lately I’ve been considering keeping my T and maybe add an RXXX…. Which makes zero sense since I don’t need 2 vehicles. First world problems

I like to switch out every few years too, but I don’t think there’s a better daily out there (at a reasonable price, that is - I’d swap it for a Cayenne Turbo or maybe a Taycan Turbo…). Makes the idea of a 2nd vehicle a lot more appealing when you know that the Rivian will still be close to the top of the line even in 5-10 years from now. I just don’t see anything else on the market that is truly better for under $150k, just ones that are different.

My 2022 Gen 1 R1T Quad-Large? Until it is no longer financially reasonable to keep on the road.

Unless the following two conditions are met:

• I come into a large sum of money - enough that a new R1T is a trivial expense. (Could be lottery, could be inheritance from a currently unknown relative, could be some stock I have written off suddenly exploding in value.)
• R1T gains both a significantly larger battery and significantly faster charging. (250+ kWh capacity, 400+ kW charging, for example.)

I will note - in 2022 the R1T replaced a 1997 Ford F-250 with >200,000 miles; if that's any indication of expected use life.

I’m within a few miles of 60k. I’m 50/50 right now on an extended warranty with xcare. I’m planning to keep my 2022 R1T for 4-5 more years at least. My last three vehicles were kept for 9 years (2013 F150), 10 years (2001 F150), and 8 years (1987 Pathfinder) so I’m a long term ownership person.

I'm keeping Arty until he gets totaled, which is how I got rid of 2 of the last 3 cars I've owned. Hopefully that's 8 - 10 years.
