Planning 6hr trip to Boston from Philly - With Kids…

Hey all!
I am planning a trip at the end of March to Boston from Philly. There is a good amount of fast charges along the way so I’m not worried about that, but I was wondering if anyone had any tips and tricks they would recommend for a 5-6hr trip with kids in a R1S.

I remember road trips when I was younger with my two siblings and my dad would take the seats out in the van and just lay a bunch of blankets and pillows down for us to sleep and relax better.

I was trying to think of fun ways to travel, and use the benefits the R1S has to make the roadtrip more fun for the kids. I’ll have hands free driving too so I’m hoping to relax more on the trip.

Does anyone have anything they’ve done or tried before, or would recommend? How to pack, what extras to bring, things to buy for the R1S?

They will have their own iPads, and a bag of snacks, probably activities to do but don’t want my car to be a dumpster.

Don't overthink it. It's 5-6 hours. You'll be fine.

Last summer we took a 3,500-mile trip with our three young kids and two dogs, all crammed into a Model Y. Don't sweat it, and just accept that your car will be a dumpster. But, they can help clean it out after the trip. That's part of the fun.

Try to plan your charging stops where there are bathrooms readily available, or a restaurant, a park, or really anywhere where everyone can stretch their legs. Buc-ees are great for this, but I don't think you have any of those in your neck of the woods. It complicates matters if you charge in the middle of parking lot somewhere with no facilities, then have to make another stop for food/bathroom break.

lol I realized my post sounds like a newbie road tripper, I’m not, but I was just wondering if there were any fun things others have done to really outfit their R1S for long trips.

I typically move the audio to the back for a podcast or audiobook for my youngest.

I think you just got/are getting a 26’ model, so it will have NACS. My Tri only came with a L2 adapter, but you’ll need a CCS adapter for most RAN locations and some others while we’re in limbo. Rivian folks have told me ran should all be NACS by December.

If your time is flexible, take advantage of the off road and off grid abilities and go in a state forest along the way for a picnic if it’s 45F+ which it could be by then

What’s the age of the kids and how many?

I’ve driven down the entire east coast with mine in several different cars

General tips:
1) Leave immediately after school. They occupy themselves with snacking, convos about their day, and they enjoy the little bit of downtime for unwinding.
2) It provides an opportunity to stop around 3 hours in for dinner/charging/bathroom. From Philly it would also get you past a lot of the heavier areas and hopefully get juist ahead of the traffic or stop during the traffic.
3) Once back in the car it’s a relatively short ride the rest of the way there. A movie, book etc.

We use a headrest mount for the iPad minis. They like those better than their phones, or I had dedicated screens with mini PS, NES, Segas. The iPad minis wins.

Bluetooth noise cancelling headphones for each of them.

We us a small basket tha holds snacks and waste in the center.

It really doesn’t get complicated until we try to go more than 600 miles in a day. When we do over 1000, we try to break it up a bit more.
