This is terrible news and foreshadow R2 Launch edition pricing will be out of this world.

I will wait for R2 Max battery version in 2027.
That assumes a lot without any substantive evidence. It may also be a way to attract many to the launch edition.

It would be quite interesting because I'm sure the vast majority would opt for it due to technology lack of lidar. They would return it potentially buy it back and add it to their loaner fleet.

I imagine those acquiring the R2 at launch won’t care much about Lidar as it is well known Lidar is Launching later this year. Some just want a solid EV.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't most people lease EVs? Not sure what them announcing leasing correlates with it being expensive.

Rivian is like Tesla, where less than half of vehicles sales are lease vs purchased. Legacy auto EV lease ratios are anywhere from 70% to 90+%.

I’ve never leased a car before but had been leaning towards doing it for R2 as a way to have one ASAP while being able to more easily move into a lidar-equipped one (and one with probably lots of kinks worked out) in a couple of years. At the very least I’ll be happy if the option is available to me at launch.

Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.

I’m leasing now with an option to do a buyout. I see nothing wrong with it. It’s much cheaper than buying new. Nearly 80% of EVs are leased. Probably due to the expense and rapidly changing technologies.

Good news--I've purchased and leased EVs in the past, and from now on, it's lease only for me.

I think Rivian learned a lot with the R1 and they need to move every car they can with the R2. That is how important the R2 is to them, with leasing this opens the buying pool significantly. Also related to the cost comment, this could be true that the R2 launch will be in the mid $60k range. Leasing would lower the payment and make it attractive even at the sticker price. Programs will be critical to the success more than the sticker price and it appears Rivian knows this.

Then Rivian can buy back the vehicle and resell it used or in the case of a buyout the customer can choose to finance it and keep it. It all depends on what the residual value is vs. the market value.

One of the downsides is you’ll never get a super low APR, like 0%, when buying used. A good chunk of the vehicle will be paid off though, not to mention depreciation, so the payments should be more reasonable. You’re also the one that previously drove it so you know how it was treated.

Another advantage is if you don’t like the residual value, especially if it’s higher than the market value, you can just walk away (after paying some fees). Another disadvantage is limited miles and you can’t modify the car unless you can undo what you did.

Buying because I'm going to be making permanent modifications.
