...60k is a bargain, to those who gladly shelled out 75-120 for R1 models , I'm not sure its a bargain to enough people to see the kind of sales numbers Rivian hopes to see?
Completely agree.

The market capture increase an order of magnitude with every $10K price reduction. R3 cannot come fast enough for Rivian to actually realize mass production sales.

R2 is the only option that is offroad capable at that price point. But if all you'll be doing is mall crawling which a majority of buyers are then there are a lot of options in that space which may be better suited for on road use from premium brands and non-premium brands.
Subaru Trailseeker has reasonable ground clearance, AWD and Subarus s-drive tuning so likely reasonable competent off-road.

Destination is something that has to be added to almost any car in the US when comparing MSRP.
Yes but some manufacturers charge around $1200 and others $1800 so that $600 adds, just like some charge $1750 or greater for a paint other than standard and others charge well less than $1000 so those differences need to be taken into account.

Premium brands around $60k? A BMW X3 starts at $56k and 0-60 of 6s. Audi Q5 is at $53k and just below 6s as well. Volvo EX60 at $52k and 0-60 in 6.5s. To get "comparable" performance, add at least $10k to these prices. Once the non-LE R2 comes out, it will likely be cheaper and still faster than these vehicles.

Oh, and these premium brands really do not feel premium at these price points - specially looking at the X3. I still give Rivian the lead here. Matter of opinion, but to me, there is no comparison.

It will come eventually. Also $45k is not what it used to be. It is now middle tier trims for compact SUVs in the non premium space. Cars are really expensive now. I don't know why we are expecting Rivian to release a better product and at a cheaper price than where the market is.
Not sure why you quote W5, X3 when I was comparing apples to apples - iX3, EX60 etc.

I recently looked at a 2026 Subaru Solterra Limited XT (mid level trim with AWD). Lower HP, shorter range, not as good off road but still does pretty well. Dealer offered it to me for $39K. That's $7K below MSRP. If Rivian wants to sell the R2 in volume they will need to get below $50K ASAP.

Comparing what’s out there right now. And those are also going to be over $60k.

It's $7,000 below MSRP because NOBODY WANTS ONE! It's completely undesirable in this market, which is why Toyota and Subaru are giving the things away. The R2 has the potential to be a big hit if the price is right.

The difference is Subaru as a whole is facing declining demand. The tariffs also don't help. Rivian does not have the same challenges. Apples to oranges. Average transaction for a new car in 2025, regardless of ICE or EV, was over $50k. Rivian doesn't need to go below that "ASAP". And it most likely won't until GA plant is built and ramping in 2028. By then, battery costs should be lower, which makes even more financial sense for Rivian (better profit margin).

The launch edition will be $55,999 + $2000 (Destination) for a total of $57,999.
  • There will be free paint upgrade options,
  • free connect +
  • and possibly a wheel upgrade for free.
  • Also some unique LE badging.
That's my prediction. They have to do something extra special to kick this off right...in particular for those on the fence about lidar.

After reading everyone's comments, my bet is that the LE R2 will be $55k.

Average price of a new car in the US last year/month was $49,191. In the mid-50's for the non-base version, they'll do well. Still a long way to go to get out of fully-CapEx heavy mode, but I'm confident.

Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.
(320 mile, 650hp, no lidar), how do you feel? Good for us and for Rivian?
I think the non-launch, dual-motor AWD R2 that gets 320 miles should be $55K or about $10K more than the standard single-motor RWD R2 that probably get under 300 miles with a smaller battery.

The launch model will be closer to $60K, because in reality Rivian has an insane amount of demand for the R2 (200K+ reservations), low production for the rest of 2026 (20K-25K), and they need to make a profit in order to stabilize themselves financially, please their shareholders, and use said profit to continue to expand (make more R2s, Georgia plant, work out production for R3, etc.)

Leaving money on the table that they’d more than likely acquire via early adopters and people who have already paid a substantial sum on R1Ts and R1Ss would be a financial mistake. They need money now. VW’s billions are not going to last forever.

More and more people have told me they’re interested in putting in a reservation for R2 and have asked me questions about my Rivian. This is in stark contrast to my experience even 1 year ago where people were more interested in who makes Rivian. If they have 300k+ reservations for R2 now, it wouldn’t surprise me and I think they’ll be fine.
