Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.
Not sure if this means anything, or not, but the wording Starting at $45,000 was removed from the Rivian R2 website. I think they don’t want to confuse customers when the launch model debuts and it quite a bit higher than $45K. There are some other potential factors to consider as well, like:

• Announcing the $45K price 2 years ago (automakers should stop doing this)
• The loss of the $7,500 EV Tax Credit (it matters to people who aren’t rich)
• No $45K model available at launch? (although it now says meet the full lineup)
• Tariff Boy screwing with the world economy and starting wars

I can’t wait until next Thursday!

I think this is just Rivian updating the site to get ready for the March 12th event. I wouldn't read into anything until March 12th.
You’re probably right, but automakers do have the tendency to advertise the starting at price on their websites. It’s the ‘starting at’ and ‘up to (300+ miles)’ technique where they list the lowest price and the highest range, even though those two stats don’t correlate with each other.

Most likely to avoid confusion with the part towards the top that says "Launching with Dual Motor".

I can't remember which, but one of the EV podcast guys that were at the preview drive last month that mentioned that people were gonna be "pleasantly surprised" by the pricing.

I wouldn't be surprised if Rivian launched competitive pricing. They've known the prices to beat for years now. There haven't been many new entrants into the space. We know the Model Y is their direct competitor. I'd be really surprised if they aren't as good or better than Y pricing. RJ is a pretty smart guy, why would he launch something less appealing than what's already out there?

Does that mean a positive surprise on range and charging? A little love (like 350 miles and 250 kw would be nice)

Inflation alone makes $45000 in 2024 equate to $46,658 in 2026. It will probably be around $48,384 in 2027.

Just throwing that out there….

There have been a few poorly written articles that misunderstood "starting at" to mean the release and not lineup and writing that it "starts shipping at $45k" and that there is a "$45k launch edition".

I am sure it's to remove some of that mis-information.

Not to mention all the click-bait "R2 pricing and specs revealed" articles that suggest the same in the title, but in fact have no new pricing information.

I am sure Rivian took inflation into account as they announced in 2024 that it had a target ship date of 2026. They weren't announcing a 2024 release/dollars.

That said, they may not have expected other pricing challenges (tariffs, memory/components shortages, etc).

If you need the $7500 to be able to "afford" the car then you can't afford the car. That being said I do think it's overall bad that it went away already given the rest of the world seems to still be subsidizing them.

I didn’t NEED $7500 to “afford” either of my EVs when I bought them. But I likely wouldn’t have bought them without it because I have a price in mind I want to pay for a daily car regardless of the max I can afford

Which I think is fine. It goes in line with my second statement. People will opt for path of least resistance more often than not and price was a barrier for a lot to take on the new technology/unknowns. Unfortunately there's a lot of people who buy cars purely based on how much room they have available to spend on a monthly basis and not looking at it from a "I'm saving money on the car I was already going to buy" attitude.
