good lord it's not about wanting LIDAR or not, it's about adopting the current Gen2 hardware platform TODAY and knowing it will be replaced by GEN3 hardware in 6 months. Ask anyone with a 2023/24 Gen1 vehicle what it's like being deprioritized for all updates and having to settle for scraps as software development and support charges forward with 90% of the focus on the new hardware platform. The question is whether you want an R2 badly enough RIGHT NOW to enjoy 6 months of updates and software fixes (which are particularly important for a launch edition vehicle) and then spending the remaining 4-5years of your financing plan or 2.5 years of your lease, just getting bare bones maintenance updates every month and watching the next generation receive the lions share of new feature and updates.

I'm interested, but won't be getting it. My R1S lease ends towards the end of 2027, and that is when I'll likely switch to an R2.

I’m not interested in the launch edition, because I don’t see the need for the rush. There are many new EVs coming in the next year or so, and I don’t think there’ll be any fomo with R2 reservations. There will be enough inventory soon enough.

I’m still not thrilled about the electronic door handles. These should have been mechanical

The difference between Gen 1 and Gen 2 is likely much greater than the difference between Gen 2 and Gen 3.

The biggest difference seems to be the specialized chipset for autonomy that's required to process enough data for L4.

Did Rivian mean the light interior won't be available on launch day, or did they mean it will never be in a Launch Edition? I loath the thought of a glass roof and a black interior.

UHF autonomy, ultra wide band keys. Rivian probably can do more on mobileye for gen1, but there’s no payoff for them

Chill out. I love my Gen 1. But it’s another to say they’re releasing lots of updates for Gen 1

What updates will the gen 3 hardware have that the LE R2 won’t have? All it’s getting is lidar and a new chipset to handle it. If you don't care about self-driving, the LE will be fine for a lease term.

What seems to be missing in the discussions around selecting R2 LE or not is considering when Rivian will introduce non-Launch Edition Performance options. The Rivian press release just lists the constrained options for the LE version, with availability Spring 2026, and then the R2 Premium with availability late 2026. Presumably somewhere between those two "dates" Rivian will start to offer non-LE R2 Performance, along with the additional paint options and the Coastal Cloud Signature interior.
