on a side note, honestly i always thought rivian's paint selection options made absolutely no sense, where you pay more for a solid color and a metallic one is free, and different metallic colors have different pricing. same issue with tesla paints, although solid black is now gone. up until i think 2016 tesla had solid colors free, metallic colors priced at 1k, and pearl colors 1.5k.

bmw/mercedes/audi have solid free and metallic at a consistent upcharge (except for merdedes manufaktur and bmw individual colors). porsche does have several tiers of metallic colors, but always a free solid color option. lucid also has solid black free on gravity and 1k for any metallic color.

if glacier white, which i believe is the only solid rivian color is standard, it makes perfect sense

One of the influencer videos mentioned light silver (can't remember the name) is base.

Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.

I agree. I remember Out of Spec saying Glacier White has no metallic flake in it. Makes sense, if it was cheaper to produce it would be the default.

But Glacier White is not standard on the R1 (was originally). All the paints are comparable in cost to Rivian and they choose just one to be standard. Hopefully their paint prices are reasonable (ie less than $1000) as all the competition including BMW and Volvo have cheaper paint options than R1.

Paint is one of the most expensive parts of a vehicle, but yeah, I hope optional colors aren’t too expensive. The R2 is both smaller than an R1 and has dark gray paint on the front and rear bumpers. That’s got to cut down on the amount of primary paint they use, thus reducing the cost.

Paint may be expensive but is there a large difference between say the white and the silver, or the silver and the green? Mainstream manufacturers as well as many premium manufacturers seem to be able to offer multiple “free” paints and options under $800. Rivian charging $1950 to 3000 on R1 is ridiculous but understandable since the underlying vehicle was not profitable so they have to make the money up in options. In the case of R2 it should be profitable at scale and then they don’t need to rely on options to turn a profit.

I think there is definitely something to certain paints costing more based on additives, but I believe the cost difference, at least for lower volume producers like Rivian, is scale. They likely get a volume discount from their supplier and setting a single, somewhat desirable, color as base ensures they more easily hit those volume gates.

The R1 line was definitely low volume and they were going for the luxury market, so maybe they were trying to break even with the pricier paint options. Who knows?

I would hope that the R2 paint options would be lower. Rivian does need to make money and fast, so they can continue to expand and grow as quickly as possible. I don’t think they’re going to be profitable for quite some time given heavy investments in autonomous driving, completing the Georgia plant, starting validation on R3, etc.

P.S. I think white is a better default color than gray. It reflects more heat and your AC doesn’t have to run as hard in the Summer, saving you on battery and range. I’d get a cover for the sun roof, too. Not a fan of being blasted by the sun while I drive, especially on long trips.

Rivian R1T R1S Is R2 base color now Glacier White? 1774214071096-1h

Is the highlighted circle the Esker Silver? On the Rivian R2 website they don't label or indicate what the color is when you select it.
