I'm looking to replace a very worn set of BF Goodrich K02s with something fun. I only mount these when I'm going off road so they aren't used often and frankly may last the remaining time I own the vehicle. 99% other times I'm on my factory 22" wheels with Michelin Defenders.

I do NOT do aggressive rock crawling but I will do some pretty rocky trails, normal fire roads, maybe some water crossings/small bits of mud (if I can find any in SoCal), and sand. In the next few weeks I might hit the Pismo sand dunes.

That being said, I'd prefer something "fun" and very rugged and visually aggressive. I don't care about efficiency or noise THAT much but I would rather not use something like a mud specific tire which is crazy loud and heavy. Do I need something crazy? Nope, but I want it and that's okay :).

I posted this in a Rivan FB group and got some suggestions so I'll include them here. Also looking for more suggestions and photos if you have them. I'll be mounting these on my Ram 2363 20" wheels.
  • BF Goodrich K03s - I like the K02s and heard the K03 is even better. But I'm open to trying something more interesting because, why not?
  • Goodyear Duatrac - Someone suggested these and it looks nice.
  • Nitto Ridge Grappler - Pretty popular here with the 22" wheel it seems. AI says this is really the best all around for me in terms of driveability, all terrain, and aggressive looks.
  • Mickey Thompson Baja Boss - I don't know anything about this but it looks pretty aggressive.
  • Toyo Open Country R/T - Until a few days ago I only knew about the A/T which I wasn't a fan of. R/T seems interesting to me.
  • Cooper STT Pro - Another suggestion but these appear to be much more MT focused so probably not for me.
  • Yokohama Geolander G003 - Same thing. MT focused and will likely be worse for me in sand. There's no real mud anywhere near me.
What do you guys recommend? Also open to hearing what size I should go with (stock or slightly wider?) When the sizing gets to "35" and all that, I'm confused what I should use.

Pics for attention.

Used a white paint pen on my K02s for fun. :p So bonus points if the tire I get has a white raised lettering option haha.

I had the Baja Boss on my Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk (still on the OEM tires on my '25 R1T) and I really liked them. I had the LT sidewall construction. They were great on the road (good turn-in and freeway manners), didn't get too loud, and, as you know, they looked the part. Off-road they never failed me but then I didn't push them very hard either. They are on my shortlist when I replace the OEM tires.

I had the Nitto ridge grapplers 22” easily the winner. They are pricey.

KO3s on mine - built like tanks - efficiency isn’t bad, run well on the freeway and I have a ton of confidence on the rocky places we take them. Only downside is that they run when pulled out of the garage on low clearance and making a hard turn to pull out onto the road.

Not as much sidewall as some of the others listed on your thread but I think these Nokians (20's) are more than capable to handle what you described. I use them as my daily driver cause I'm too lazy to swap. I def took a range hit but worth it for the stance. It's all about the offset IMO

All of the suggestions you got were bad IMO. You don’t want or need a MT and RTs aren’t going to help much either for what you’re after. You want a load range E tire that can take very low pressures and based on the requirement for an aggressive looking tire you’re in the market for a Toyo AT3EV or a scorpion XTM AT. I actually have both so maybe I’m biased but I’ve run pressures as low as 10 psi on both and have found they work excellently for the primarily dry and rocky conditions we have here in Colorado with the occasional muddy day.

I think the Toyo looks slightly more aggressive from the side but I have found it to be slightly more vague when getting sporty. The XTM does marginally better in that regard.

Thank you. So I ended up purchasing a set of these. I was in a bit of a rush since I needed them mounted by this weekend.

These were my top choice, and I was so close to getting these but the fact that the Baja Boss A/T (not R/T) was 3 peak rated pushed me to that direction.

I have no doubt the K03 is amazing. I loved the K02 and that's been a legend in the off road world. But I wanted to try something different.

I didn't think about that one, oops. They look pretty nice.

After doing a bunch of research after this post, I ended up getting the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss A/T (not R/T) because you're right. I watched a ton of review videos and I don't think any of the R/T and especially not M/T are really good in wet or snow. The big wide lugs of an M/T are even worse for sand. I think I was attracted to the visuals of the M/T and R/T but usability won this one.

In SoCal, there's no real mud. It is just sand that gets wet sometimes haha. There's rocky trails and frankly that can be done with almost any tire if you have clearance. But I wanted to have a bit of fun, cuz why not.

I will do sand dunes though so the fact that R/T and M/T will just dig in turned me off. I don't want a fun looking tire that's useless for me.

Yes, Toyo AT3 EV is the correct answer, can get it in SL if not towing (45#) or LT if towing or want heavy duty use (55#)

There’s no point in going SL if you want to do any legitimate off-roading. Load E tires do much better with less air and there’s hardly a range penalty.

Tend to agree with you, but I’d have to be going off road weekly/monthly or more frequently to justify the penalty (efficiency and drivability), extra tread and longer tire life is a nice bonus.

To comment on the above...

Don't care about range. I toss these on when going off road, into the mountains, on the sand dunes. Otherwise, will be using my normal 22" wheel/tire setup 99.9% of the time.

These Mickey Thompson Baja Bosses will last longer than I will own the Rivian.

Congrats! You will love them. The Baja Boss A/T seem to be highly regarded in the off-road community, and they certainly look the part.

Have fun!
