It's very dependent on location, and sometimes time of day (Tesla has some locations with low time of day pricing).

So, if I'm on a trip, and ONE of the stops could be IONNA, but I'm charging a lot more times, and NONE of those stops can be IONNA (because they're not around those locations), then the Tesla stop makes more sense.

For example, on a recent trip ABRP suggested IONNA, when the nearby Tesla with membership was cheaper, and I had dozens of charges over multiple days each way.

Sure, for a one off charge, it might make sense.
Sure, totally. I’ll do the same, and pay for a month of Tesla membership if I know I’m going to have to use Tesla at least twice during the month. Though since IONNA has started spreading, I’ve rarely had to actually do that. I use their chargers in Kansas fairly often.

All else being equal, however, I’ll prefer Ionna over Tesla simply to support their business model and competition in the charging market. Being able to charge with nothing more than a credit card really should be the default, and the less lock-in the better.

In Ellensburg, WA, RAN vs the two Tesla stations:

Member/Brand owner priceOther users price
RAN$0.45/kWH$0.49/kWh
Tesla #1 (up to 250kW)$0.41/kWH$0.57/kWh
Tesla #2 (up to 325 kW)$0.38/kWh$0.53/kWh

So it's interesting to see the RAN kind of snuggled in between the range of Tesla pricing. Wonder if that's the case in other areas.

Plus, the RAN has a trailer pull-thru spot - the Tesla stations don't.
Pull through is a major concern for me when we are pulling the travel trailer. Only Ionna, EVGo/GMEnergy, and RAN have had them that I've seen.

heading out on a month long road trip next week. Looking forward to using a few of these Ionna rechargeries along the way.

There's a few Tesla places that have them (two that I have personally been to in Washington State), but it's something that I think Rivian tries to do more than Tesla does.

Heck, Rivian is going to build one in Ritzville that has two pull thru spots!

The two RAN chargers that I've used had one dedicated pull-through, but also one that you could use as a pull-through even though it wasn't necessarily intended to be used that way.

Anything is a pull-thru spot when you have air suspension, right? 🤪

I agree with OP, ive only ever used the one in fruita, but just like a gas station tap your card and roll. How it needs to be, plug and charge is fine but not having to fumble with an app is nice, and they can dispense 400kw

Do you guys just plug the Ionna directly into your rivian to start charging? Mine seem to fail when I do that and so I have to start the charge via the Chargepoint app.

My first charge at an IONNA station and I must say this is the model of the future. 10 cents/kwh cheaper than Tesla and much and less than RAN or EA. No subscription required just ,39/kwh, has both CCS and NACS plugs. I just wish there were more of them.
I had the exact same experience and love it.
