Update 2026.07.0 Bug -
When attempting to charge at a Tesla supercharger (Marysville, CA) Rivian will show error “Please Update Your Payment Method in Rivian App”. Updating a payment method does not resolve the issue. There was no payment method issue to begin with. Moving to another charger resolves the issue.

Personal thoughts. These kind of bugs are a waste of time and should be unacceptable for a $100,000 vehicle. But they are common.

it honestly boggles my mind that people equate higher price with higher reliability. the higher price is the result of higher complexity which inherently leads to lower reliability.

It’s not clear if the move to another charger was a non Tesla charger. You’re correct if it is.

If moving to another Tesla charger worked, then it was probably the charger. If moving to another charging platform like RAN/EA, then it was probably the Tesla payment service. We haven't had any issue after the update.

I think what the OP was reasonably suggesting is that the Rivian was displaying a misleading error message so perhaps more than just a Tesla issue.

Personally, I am more than willing to pay a premium for the simplicity and convenience of plug-and-charge. The fewer apps I have to deal with for charging the better. But I only take road trips a few time per year, I don't charge at Tesla on a regular basis.

Be aware. If you have a Tesla account and pay the membership, then only use the Tesla app at the supercharger. If you pull up and just plug in your Rivian you will not receive the lower rates !!!!!

I had this “Update Your Payment Method” problem at a Tesla supercharger about a month ago. Went online and changed my default credit card. Didn’t work. So I went to the next Tesla supercharger and had the same problem. So then on a hunch, I rebooted the display system in the Rivian (two outside buttons on the steering wheel). It started working.

Exactly what I’m trying to say. No Tesla membership. I moved from one Tesla charger to another Tesla charger 10 feet away. The error message is inaccurate.

I'm reporting a bug I hope Rivian patches so other users don't experience it. I don't care if you think a higher price for a product or service should not relate to reliability @electruck. If that were not the case or expectation, brands like Ferrari, BMW, or Mercedes would never get off the ground. I know, I know, today they have fallen behind the competition or the competition has caught up. In either case, nobody wanted to own a Kia in 2005. Today is different.
