You might want to do your research on who this is….
I also fall into the category of having no clue who this guy is. I could only handle a couple minutes. The guy was way too slow for me with too many misspeaks.

when he said the pass through from the cabin into the gear tunnel was for ski’s… ??‍♂??‍♂??‍♂

not my type of commentator.

I have only watched the first five minutes or so, but somehow Sandy has mentioned the Bronco, the F-150, the Ranger, and the Maverick.
lol. I was completely baffled by him saying it's not a competition with the F-150 and Ranger, but maybe an electrified Maverick.

Sandy is always boring. Test drives and demos are not his forte. The best thing he does with every vehicle is a complete tear down giving us so much info about how they are made and how they work. I’m no engineer but I am always interested in that.

He is probably thinking about the bed size (both are 4.5 feet). Ranger is probably closest in length. F-150 is a bigger beast so fair to not directly compare them in some ways.

I doubt he was going into that much thought. Having seen all three trucks in person, I would not think "man, the Maverick is a closer competitor to the R1T than the Ranger." The R1T is bigger than a ranger overall, and functionally much much closer. It's just a super weird comparison to me.

Agreed more Ranger than Maverick competitor. Although still aimed at a bit different segment of the truck market.

Many of you are fixated on meaningless things. Sandy is a super busy CEO of his own company so he’s not spending time researching something like an R1T’s spec sheet that many of us have memorized. Sandy likes to see a product first time with no preconceived notions or research. With that said, his team has 5 R1T reservations and will be taking one down to the simplest of pieces and then sell that information to whoever wants to buy it. Personal I can’t wait for the tear down. With Rivian’s production problems we can only hope Sandy and his team were hired by Rivian and are helping RJ & people find solutions to get their production ramp progressing.

I love Sandy but if I'm Rivian and knowing what he's going to do to the R1T I make sure I slow roll his delivery. Maybe he gets a free max pack upgrade in Limestone and he doesn't see a truck for another 2 years.

He's old. Not like these newer age commentators that tend to blow things waay out of proportions -

"What do you mean it doesn't have a drain plug? ERHMAHGAWD, YOUR CAR IS GARBAGE! This won't make it around the corner!! How can you not put in a ... oh, there's the plug." ?

Disagree. He just blows other stuff out of proportion.

I'm not normally a Sandy Munro fan, but it was a good watch. Couple interesting things I got from their talk that I hadn't heard before.
  • You can change the height of the suspension up to 50 mph.
  • Sport mode increases torque +20% from All-Purpose mode.
  • The torque difference between the front and rear motors is due to gearing differences and the motors are actually identical. So Conserve mode only uses the front motors because it's a taller gear ratio to better optimize for higher speeds. The rear motor has a shorter gear ratio to optimize for acceleration since weight transfers to the rear anyway. RJ mentioned that the front motor / wheel torque is basically at a point where the tire and weight transfer is the limitation.
  • Headliner is made from recycled ocean plastics.
From what I understood the headliner is made from "recycled materials" and the parts bins that ship parts into the factory are made from the "ocean plastic".
Still awsome!

Can’t believe Sandy compared it to maverick

when RJ said we are creating downstream demand for ocean plastic, I got the urge to throw some crap in the ocean to support Rivian.

Edit:

I wonder if RJ has a shirt for every Rivian color.

what cracked me up:
RJ: this is the glow in the dark button for my kids when they lock themselves in the frunk.
Sandy: So you haven’t figured out how to disable it yet?

Edit:

Gear guard does not detect dogs. Now thieves will either come in on all fours or they start adopting and training K9s

Edit: screen coming on to tell the thieves security feature is recording you makes the car less secure. This is how they can tell it is not on.

Compared to the others? Pfft. Sandy is a feather weight. He's just old and talks from that perspective vs. the 'You're missing this feature? CAREER OVER! YOU SUCK' crowd.

Sandy may not be everyone‘s cup of tea, but he is a respected expert in the industry. He’s blunt and honest - I actually feel like him saying “I kinda like that” is him being pretty enthusiastic. ?

As others have noted, he doesn’t know that much about the R1T. In his recent Ioniq 5 video he talked about this and it is intentional. He doesn’t want his opinions shaped by others and wants to just give his own initial first impressions.

A lot of people will tell you he is a Tesla fanboy - but I really disagree. He was very critical of many things about the Model 3 in his first tear downs. He has been a lot more positive of late, but that’s cause Tesla has improved.

In any case, his teardown of the R1T will be very good content and I look forward to it. Yes, I’m sure he will find lots of stuff he doesn’t like when doing it, but that’s pretty normal for him.
