Buy the T. When you need to move 7 people, just put your 5 favorites in the cabin, the smallest one in the gear tunnel and the smelliest one in the bed. The tonneau cover will keep the rain and wind off. No worries. ?

I am in a similar boat. I originally ordered the R1S because I liked the idea of keeping my gear in an enclosed space when we go on trips.

Then, I realized the tonneau cover would be fine and wanted to be able to put bikes over the bed instead of a hitch rack. So I switched to the truck.

Now it sounds like my large Hard Tail and 56cm Gravel bike will be too long to fit on the over the bed racks. This means I will have to, either, put the bikes in the bed leaving no covered storage (aside for gear tunnel and drunk) or get a hitch rack.

There are a couple of times a year when I sleep in my Jeep which is a nice option with the R1S.

I will very rarely use the 7 seats, but it might be nice to be able to take one car with my parents and kids occasionally. That being said, my kids might not even fit in the third row. I won’t know until I see one.

I do like the fact that the S is a little shorter and may be easier to park at the school I teach at.

I do like the gear tunnel on the truck, but am worried the tonneau way have issues.

I guess I won’t really know until I see one and hopefully drive one.
I agree as well...I guess i did not pay attention to that aspect of the bike racks...as I have a 58cm road bike, triathlon bike, and gravel bike. So, that would be a deal breaker (not enough length!). I really like the gear tunnel and gear guard...but i feel the R1S may just be more appropriate for me as well!

The length of the SUV is a big plus (shorter)
I think it looks better
7 seats might get used once in a blue moon

The truck has so much utility though with a bed

I am getting the SUV, if I like it and the Rivian experience, buy the truck 2024/25, and have both for the family to use...

man, Rivian makes it hard! I like features of both models, hard to choose.
I like the T for hauling gear, stuff, but like the optional 3 rd row of seats and fully enclosed SUV.

Leaning toward the T (what i reserved initially) as carrying 7 people will not happen often, and putting bike on top of the S (and getting down) will be a pain in the butt. I have a rear mounted rack now on my Audi, but hate that I have to lower it, or remove the bikes first to get into the rear. Not sure if i am missing something, but think the T cheeks a lot more boxes for most adventurers who are cool with a 5 person option.

Check the wheelbase of your bikes to make sure. My gravel bike is literally within a few mm of fitting. I kind of want to take my bike to the Venice Hub, air down the rear tire and see if it will fit.

yes...the gear tunnel checks a lot of boxes, and is a sixth seat!

I have a family of 5 with 3 kids that will be 9 by the time I get my Rivian. I’d prefer the R1T but if they come out with a captains chair second row on the 3 row R1S that will be really tempting.

I'm getting the truck because I have always wanted a truck and couldn't justify the gas costs. I also have 2 high school kids so not a lot of carting around a bunch of kids anymore. Plus the truck just looks so much better than the SUV. Wish the SUV looked more like a 4Runner but it just doesn't.

I ordered the R1T originally. At that point I was just looking to save a few grand and didn't think we needed another 3 row SUV (my wife drives a CX-9), but then I realized that I'm going to want to take the Rivian on our road trips and the SUV just seems more functional for, e.g., family ski trips that we will be taking in the winter - having that enclosed back seems better family & ski-wise for cold temp trips. Although I won't use the 3rd row a ton, I'd also prefer to cart extended family around in the Rivian than in our other car. I'll use the tow hitch for bikes, and I think the 17 fewer inches on the R1S will come in handy maneuvering around parking spaces. The only real downside is that gear tunnel door to access the roof rails - that is genius. I am torn between explore and adventure trims. I've got a first half 2023 delivery window (May 2021 order) but am leaning toward splurging on color and tires v. interior trim as I don't necessarily see the value for the extra $5K in the adventure package (though if money were no option I would go for it for sure) - this thing is already way more than I would normally spend on a vehicle.

So I tried to game the system thinking if preorder is switched from R1S to R1T that a Rivian may hit the driveway s00ner. Dubious based on below chat response.

Yes, based upon the same platform and tech as the R1T and that there seems to be no EV SUV's nearing production. I do not consider crossovers true SUV's which is the direction most EV "SUV's" are going in efforts to keep range up.

I agree with you on this. I see nothing else coming to the market that meets what I am looking for in an EV SUV. I really think the R1S could potentially outsell the R1T.

If GM put the Tahoe on the Silverado platform, it could interest me. Lucid Gravity seems like they are going the direction of the Tesla Model X and building it on the car’s platform.

Still too early to tell. Remember this is their first version/gen of this model. It WILL have issues. I know I'm beating a dead horse here, but best option is to wait and see.

Probably just depend on what someone prefers, truck or SUV. But I do think the R1T got some bonus press coverage the R1S won't because it was the first electric truck to market, has a gear tunnel to make it distinctive, and an available slide out kitchen. So I think the R1T is a better debut vehicle to grab attention.
