'Premium' doesn't always equal 'cost extra'. It's labeled as such since it's nicer than the standard interior (which will come with the Standard Trim of R2 sometime next year).
The word is often used to indicate higher quality and/or higher cost-to-consumer. And sometimes it is used to justify charging the customer more and not because it cost Rivian more, or is of higher quality. Example: paint colors and interior colors, that are "available" at additional "premium".

And who knows... Maybe certain colors do cost Rivian more, which influence their decision on which options to make standard and procure larger quantities of. Industry-wide, majority of cars sold to-date are not ones with white/white-ish interiors. That alone would indicate Rivian probably didn't anticipate it to be majority of customer demand and didn't procure it in equal amounts from supplier. From what we [should already] know about quantity pricing, that means higher per unit cost... which would be passed on to customers.

I can see why someone wanting Costal Cloud would wish it to be a no-additional-cost option. But, that's just wishing for an exception to be the norm. Unrealistic.

On the R1 Quad, the Ocean Coast interior is $2500 and Slate Sky is $3000
Those are 'premium' interiors - upgrades from the 'standard' interior, yes?
By that I mean it is not just a color difference?

No, these are all the Ascend interior. Black materials are the same as Ocean Coast and Slate Sky. There's no path from going from the Adventure to the Ascend interior directly. Both R2 interiors in discussion here are premium.

Hmmm. I didn't know about 'Ascend' vs 'Adventure', but I see it now. It's weird how Rivian has approached this. Unnecessarily confusing to me, but I digress.

For the R2, obviously we still don't know the details. But we know the L:E has a premium interior.

For the R1, I looked at the Dual, Tri, and Quad.
The Ascend is the premium interior, on the TRI and the QUAD.
The Adventure is standard and only the Dual models.

R1 Dual
- Black Mountain & Dark Ash is standard
- Ocean Coast (non-premium) is a $2000 option.
R1 TRI
- PREMIUM Black Mountain & Dark Ash is standard
- PREMIUM Ocean Coast is a $2500 option
- Slate Sky & Walnut is a $3500 option
R1 QUAD
- PREMIUM Black Mountain & Dark Ash is 'INCLUDED'
- PREMIUM Ocean Coast is a $2500 option
- Slate Sky & Walnut is 'INCLUDED'

Pretty confusing, but it looks like the light interior is always an extra cost option in the R1 world.
Probably will be for the R2 as well.
We will find out in June.

i think youʻre right. i know many here are wishing for CC interior to be a free option...but iʻm highly doubtful. i want launch green with coastal cloud and 20" AT wheels. iʻm already anticipating that i will be paying a pretty penny for each of those options...maybe around $6500 for all three. hope not, but iʻm bracing for it...

Light colours nearly always more expensive than dark on cars (don't know why) but at least dark doesn't show the dirt as bad. Perhaps it ages better too?

No mention in the update on these options.
Unclear if the options are choices or paid upgrades,
Really hoping for a 23" wheel option.

That’s exactly the configuration I want.

R2 is smaller than R1S so the prices should be cheaper than the upgrade costs in R1S. I would imagine they'll mirror Tesla's upgrade costs.

Something on the order of $2k for paint, $2k for wheels, and $1k for interior.

$6,500 seems steep so I hope you’re wrong 😬

$5k seems exorbitant too when Volvo is not charging for interior or exterior color changes. BMW and even Porsche have plenty of exterior paints for under $1000.

I had the "white" interior in my R1 and even after 3 years, it looked great. It is more of a light gray. And this is with a dog, messy wife and passengers of all ages. Wiped occasionally and always looked fine. It is synthetic/vinyl/vegan leather/whatever you want to call it so a lot more durable than other traditional materials, so I think the logic that it doesn't show dirt as bad is not necessarily the case, at least with Rivian.

My assumption is that it cost more because it is viewed as more of a "luxury" color. And to that point, I can agree. The white ones have always looked better, but also a matter of opinion.

All to say, I'm probably going with the dark interior on the R2. If the cloud interior had a black headliner, then maybe, but with the white headliner, I'll pass, specially at an upcharge and scheduled for later date. White headliners do collect dirt a lot easier than if it were black, in my experience.

Totally agree so I hope it's not $5k either. But if they look at Tesla who they want to steal market share from that's what they charge. So I hope they're more reasonable and like $1k or $1.5k each.

I agree $5K would be way too much for wheels and paint. I think any combination of wheels and paint that puts the performance trim above $60K and the premium above $55K is a hard stop for me. I have to admit I am probably going to cancel my reservation for the iX3 anyways

That would be plus coastal cloud interior also, but yeah still too high I agree. I know they're not Tesla but that is who they are mainly competing against and Rivian is pushing prices up against being slightly too high IMO. Model Y LR AWD is $49k; Rivian R2 AWD is $54k. So adding paint, wheels, interior and pushing $60k is gunna push people away IMO. Now if it stays close people will buy the R2 bc the form factor is way better, but it can't be too big of a gap.

100%. Soon as you start pushing the base price plus extras into the iX3 or EX60 territory, it becomes a question of, why shouldn't I take the better battery
