On the lighter interior (as well as some of the paint options) I wonder how late in 26 is “later in 2026” is? Like, sept/oct? That I can work with as my current lease is up then. After that, hmmm. might have to start force myself in to liking the dark interior.

With most getting a premium or better trim because they want AWD on their rugged "adventure vehicle" and then just adding a spare tire, paying 1.5k destination fee, and state tax, they almost all will find themselves north of 59k or a lease on that basis. Does 59k+ work as a mass market vehicle? An AWD Tesla Model Y which does sell as a mass market vehicle sells south of 46k after destination fee and taxes. Even if you go to the premium AWD Model Y which is arguably more comparable, it is still 6k cheaper. I'm sure many here for many reasons would choose to pay that 6k more, but my question is more for the masses less about us the enthusiasts.
It does. I think the phrase "mass market" is often confused for cheap or budget friendly. The two are not really interchangeable. Based on budgets, they are several options for EVs now starting as low as $30k and as high as the moon. $50k range is a sweet spot given the current average price of a new car. Rivian never came in to sell the cheapest EV and nor was the R2 meant to be their entry level option (they revealed the R3 for a reason). I also don't think they should be the cheaper option, either. They offer good packaging with a lot of space, range and nice touches along with performance, ground clearance and tech. I own a Model Y Performance and love the heck out of that thing but can't argue the R2 can ask for a bit more with its bigger frunk, boxy shape, higher ride height and it being the new kid in town.

$50k-$60k works because it attracts buyers from all over the spectrum. Those who can stretch a bit to get one or those with more money who want a well priced alternative. I still think the pricing is a homerun, paint aside - but I'm ok with that because you are only paying for cosmetic options. All the features come standard so you can either pay up to get it to look how you want or just take the free options if more price constrained and don't care. I'd also add the paint choices are very nice on Rivians, FWIW. They are basically no bad colors.

In Rivian speak, I'm always assuming as late as possible in the window. I'm not even considering light interior or Forest Green as originally intended as I'm reading Late 2026 as December. Hope to be wrong but we'll see until they provide more clarity on availability.

I really really want the light interior (dark interior in the south is 😰) but I'm not sure I'll be able to wait if my number comes up. Although I didn't reserve until July '24 so who knows how long that will be fore me.

The interior is not the same quality as the R1. I’d imagine the paint is the same, but it’s covering a smaller vehicle with a larger glass roof and dark-gray front and rear bumpers for easier repairs. IMO the paint options should be cheaper as well.
Paint is $1k cheaper than R1 for every color. Probably just smaller size in R2 like you said.

Forest green $2500 R1, $1500 R2
Glacier white $1950 R1, $1000 R2
Storm blue/catalina cove/midnight $3000 R1, $2000 R2

Model Y is available for sale today as is, why would people even be here talking about an R2 that isn't available yet?
Well one spec is available which is the LE. The other specs are also priced out so easy to compare right. The R2 definitely carries a premium over the Model Y (which is expected). I just wish they had a placeholder for the tri-motor :D

The optics of having the cheapest trim be the longest range is wild. I get it from a physics standpoint but it's terrible for sales. They need to get to a place where premium is 350+ and Performance is 400+
It'll be a smaller battery that will not charge as fast as it's competition unfortunately. Everything about R2 is to reduce costs.

Color choices lack any imagination.
Agreed, except for Borealis, which isn't even available until next year. That's a real disappointment.

But aren't the dark and light R1 interiors of equivalent quality with respect to each other? So why is the lighter one upcharged $4500?
