The R2 Launch is on my short list since it easily fits in my garage. I'm cross shopping against a Model Y Performance, base Cybertruck, and Scout EV.

So you're cross-shopping against a vehicle you already own, a massive POS failure, and what might wind up being a killer EV option (Scout, assuming you mean the Traveler model) but won't be in production till very late '27 at best case, an realistically more like '28, if ever.

[edited] I just wanted to say, I'd be stoked if Scout ever delivers, I've had a reservation in since you could make one for a BEV Traveler, but they're prioritized EREVs first, and I'm losing confidence they'll ever execute in the current state.

Well, I've had about 20 rides in the last 24-25 years or so which ones are you speaking of? The Tesla? The car I was the most thrilled to return across my long history of vehicle ownership?

I mean, I have an R2 and a Scout on reserve, so we're at least in the same ballpark in that capacity (though if you don't have either on reservation, good luck acquiring one in the short term).

The point of my post (outside calling out the absurdity of positioning musk as some kind of savior ) was that your "cross shopping" list is a bit all over the place.

It sounded like you're considering a purchase in the short term, so the Scout is out, the cybertruck is too big, and I was a touch confused about your current Model Y ownership vs. cross shopping a model Y[?] So like a second one? Replacing the first?

I have both an R1S and 2022 Model Y. I haven’t had to reboot the screen at all or maybe once.

however, Nothing compares to the Tesla software/Ui. But Rivian isn’t too far behind. I just did a long road trip in the R1S and there are little things that you notice Tesla does better. But overall, the Rivian has been a great experience.

the one thing Rivian does better is the standards autopilot. I don’t have FSD in my Y and while the Autopilot works great, it drives me insane that I have to reengage every time a change a lane. Especially if I have a coffee in my right hand, it becomes a huge pain in the arse. The Rivian automatically re engages and it’s great. I used to have the auto lane change in the Rivian which was awesome but apparently you need to pay extra for that now.

I plan on trading my Y in eventually and may even get the LE. I had considered getting another Y but they got rid of the standard autopilot and I like the looks and form factor a lot more on the R2. I think it’s crazy they got rid of autopilot as a standard feature. That is a must have imo and they should have made it re engage after changing lanes.

Rivian now uses apple key or whatever they call it. It has had a few buggy moments when it doesn't recognize the key but eventually it always did and I don't think I have had that problem since the last update. My Tesla has been flawless.

One thing that does bug me, although I am not sure if it is still the case ever since they went to apple key instead of bluetooth, is that teh bluetooth app key would unlock the car from a decent distance away. So if parked in driveway or garage it would trigger it from inside the house.

The work around has simply to not have it lock automatically when at home. I do the same with the tesla. But that is because they are always parked in the garage.

The Apple protocol uses UWB ultra wide band as well as BLE Bluetooth low energy which should be better than Bluetooth assuming the vehicle does too.

Tesla also had some more local use of NFC which is an older protocol just for very near key use or authentication.

I would imagine the Rivian would piggyback on most of these.

honestly...most of the little things that I would nit pick about, would probably not even be on my radar if I didn't already own a Tesla. If I came from a legacy car I would think everything was amazing. I think Tesla sets the bar so high that I am just nit picking little things that I think Tesla does better.

Tesla does prefer and often require that the Tesla app be open in the background to work more effectively whereas the use of Apple wallet and Apple car key is a system process so it should b available even if the app isn’t open

yes that is true. I tend to have both apps open anyways but that is a good point. I probably don't need my Rivian app open. The apple key will also still work even if your phone battery dies which is nice. Ultimately I think I prefer the apple key solution over the bluetooth app solution. Although it has always worked great with my Telsa.

I always find it funny people still carry car keys around. I would hate to have to go back to that. I don't have a house key either and haven't carried any physical keys around in 4 years. Also super convenient when a 2 car family and you are always driving each car and don't need to hunt down the spare key.

Currently daily driving a Model Y LR and I am so excited about the prospect of owning an R2. The R1 (T and S) are both just too large of vehicles, so they were never even a consideration for me. My husband and I are DINKs, so I really don't need a third row of seating or that much cargo space. I was daily driving a Hyundai Tucson before getting my Model Y, so I am looking forward to the taller stance of the R2 over the Model Y.

BTW, surprised by the amount of political banter in this thread. I'm a huge fan of Elon Musk. He is responsible for the most successful US based EV brand, recycles rockets, donates Starlink access to Ukraine and others catastrophes, helps paraplegic's regain the ability to engage, rescues people from the space station, etc.. Believe he deserves at least a Nobel Peace prize....

But...the Cybertruck would be a tight fit in the garage, the R1 is more than I need, and the R2 would provide a unique contrast to my outstanding Model Y. Still not sure about giving up FSD, but like the idea that I can get Autonomous + bundled with the Launch package.

I drank the Kool-Aid at one point as well. But I smartened up.

The one thing I will say is that the Model Y has never felt like an SUV to me. It's ground clearance is low and the shape is very bloated sedan like.

I love the Y (we are on our second one) but I just call it a "tall car" (which is fine for what it is)

A couple weeks ago I had to use my key card to get in my Cybertruck because my phone as key somehow reset while I was out walking at the lake, and there was no signal and it wouldn't unlock from the app. Also about a year ago I walked up to my front door of my house and my smart lock had died! Luckily I do keep a house key in my pocket or I would have been breaking into my own house! Needless to say I do NOT trust tech 100% and always have a manual backup.
