Imagine buying any appliance or an electronic device and it not coming with a power adapter or cord to power it. That’s asinine. For me, it’s not about the dollar amount, it’s the principle. Auto manufacturers should include a mobile or wall charger with the purchase of an EV.
Electric stoves, dishwashers and disposers all come without an appliance cord. Sold separately.

Get a new cord or reuse the old one on the appliance. Same for many EVs now.

Plenty of companies are not giving away chargers anymore. The thought was that EV buyers already have one so why give something away. It is like companies that give free road side don't provide spares, it's just not a good use of money. Not saying I agree but somewhat makes sense.

The Rivian mobile charger is a solid unit. You can find new in box units for less than $200 on eBay. throw in a couple of adapters and you are good to go where ever you find yourself. The Tesla mobile charger is a good unit too, it is a bit smaller and has pigtails you can get to avoid the adapters. I'd stay away from no-name Amazon Temu garbage.
The only adapters I've see are the 5-15 and 14-50 ones for Rivian's. Can you do other ones like the Tesla mobile can?

So, since the gen 2 Tesla mobile charger doesn't work, should I get the gen 3 one and sell the other 2 (Had one for home and other in car) to cover the price OR use the $250 referral bucks to get the Rivian one for $150? Currently still have a model Y but will hopefully trade that in for the R2, but that's just a bit of an unknown when still...

Wall connector is different than the mobile connector. The Gen3 wall connector works just fine with NACS. The Gen2 mobile and wall connectors do not work with NACS. I also have that same wall connector.
Wait what? Why would the gen2 Tesla connector not work with the R2?

Different communication or "handshake" protocol. Can read various threads on this forum, other forums, and Reddit about it. Only the Gen3 mobile and wall connectors are NACS. NACS didn't exist when the Gen2 connectors were made - just bc the physical plug is the same doesn't mean it will work.

My old Gen2 Tesla Mobile connector works just fine with my Gen1 R1T & an adapter to J1772. It goes red at first, but after about 5-10 seconds goes green and electricity starts flowing.

I've not seen any third-party adapter manufacturers making ones for either version of the Rivian Portable charger (J1772 or NACS, and the latter has a different pigtail plug layout than the J1772 version).

Yes, but that wasn't the question though. This thread is about a charger for R2, which is NACS. Tesla Gen2 connectors do not work with NACS cars. They work with a J1772 adapter for CCS cars. But again that isn't the topic of this thread, so I don't want to confuse people with it.

Fair enough, although right now we are all guessing when it comes to R2's ability to charge with the particular Tesla mobile/portable charger, unless there have been posts from someone with a 2026 R1 (which would have a NACS port) reporting this issue.....

It's been reported with Rivian and other brand's NACS vehicles. NACS didn't exist like 6 years ago when Tesla started making Gen2 chargers. Example from Reddit for Rivian, Kia, Hyundai:

So, would it just be worth to sell my 2 gen 2 chargers and get a gen 3, or use the $250 referall for Rivian's (assuming Rivian's will charge a Tesla just fine).

Now that we have NACS, kinda wish there was ONE charger too, no branding :p

Either one, it's up to you. No wrong answer now that everything is NACS.

I'd get the Tesla Gen3 for $300 and then use your Rivian credits for accessories myself.

Wait a minute, so if I sell my R1S, are you all saying I should keep my mobile charger and not give it to the person who purchases the R1S? It sounds like you all are keeping your chargers after getting rid of the older vehicle because you have these things lying around...

I always keep the charger if it works with the vehicle I'm purchasing next bc I don't sell my cars to people - it's usually to Carvana or something. I sold my Gen2 mobile connector to a new Tesla owner locally bc he didn't have one. I bought a Tesla Gen3 mobile connector for use on the road with my incoming R2 which is NACS of course. My house install is a Tesla Gen3 wall connector which will work just fine with the R2.

Rivian only has the two adapters. You can add adapters to the 14-50 pigtail, but thats not recommended for long term use. If you have a Tesla now, and want to future proof for a Rivian, why not buy a gen3 Tesla mobile EVSE, and sell the Gen 2 mobile evse. Use the rivian points for something else. If you don't have a tesla now, it's really a toss up.

Great points here. I have a NEMA 6-20 receptacle (240v 16 amps) installed at my parents house so the only way for me to charge there is with a Tesla mobile connector as they offer a 6-20 plug. Tesla has 6 or 7 plug choices unlike Rivian like you said.
