...and ends up totaling his car. Mine - hopefully no unibody damage; lots of cosmetic damage to the bumper surround/valance, the lights, sensors, the hitch plug is busted... it'll be a fun time, I am sure. His insurance already took the blame for this; his parents (to whom the car is registered) gonna be mad pissed...

Sorry to see that happen to you, but I'm glad that you shared so we could all see how well it faired. It looks like your beefy tow hitch hardware stopped the Tesla in its tracks.
I hope you get your baby up and running soon.

Has similar within the last month. But I was at the front of a 3-car so I get to enjoy the drama of one insurance company going after the other...
Normally I wouldn't care that much, but since I'm still on a lease, I need them to take care of it all. Also, I have dumbinsurance so I don't want to file a claim through my company because they'll probably raise my rates just for the claim, regardless of fault. Maybe -- I'm new to this.

Wife hit the cart rails at grocery store. I left them alone. Scratches don't show in white and the ding isn't too visible. Now I don't care about door dings on the passenger side 😂

So earlier today I lifted the flap between the tailgate and the bed, and noticed the two support ribs (for the lack of a better word) - notice how the right rib is smooth, and the left one has paint crinkles - you can see the energy transfer from the crash bar.

I am like 95% sure this is just bad manufacturing. It's ok for that part to be bad, because it isn't visible and is cosmetic. That Tesla was so low, it never reached the rib you are looking at.

The danger is that the structural part of bumper behind plastic is damaged. This is usually cheap to replace, even cheaper than painted bumper on a typical car. Not sure about costs on Rivian. But if the frame behind the bumper is bent, it could be toast.

I guess the question is - whether the frame/skateboard are dipped into a paint bath, or spray painted before the panels are welded on? Either way - I can feel the ridges of the paint - I don't think that'd byproduct of poor manufacturing... but I hope I am wrong and you're right

Afaik, the body is dipped in rust prevention coat. The paint we see and top coat are sprayed on.

You may have got away relatively unscathed. But time will tell…
I thought my R1T held up well considering a 40 mph impact from a Silverado while stopped at a traffic light… but alas, was totaled. They are tough trucks, but expensive to repair. Full replacement car insurance - best $28 annually that I ever spent. New R1T for me.

Gotta ask, full replacement insurance for so cheap?! Did it work and who’s it from if you don’t mind sharing 😁😁

Worked perfectly. No issues. Insurer wrote a check promptly for a new R1T (minus cost of my deductible and my aftermarket tint/PPF :-(
2nd time I got a G2 with the new tonneau cover (details in my signature). Insurer: Nationwide thru Rivian. Insurance of any kind is very expensive in Florida, but the ‘Replacement’ coverage was cheap. A calculated risk that happened to work great for me. YMMV
