In my garage door setup, here is a picture of the part that can scratch the hatch. I like that "pad it" idea, so I just zip tied a piece of rubber hose on to it.
I have had other family members open the garage door from the outside while I was inside with the hatch open. Lots of ways this can happen.

A couple of years ago I installed a set of these and am very happy to have them.

+1 to the Infinity Shield!

The install was super easy, basically you disconnect the existing sensor wires and connect the Infinity Shield wires. The brackets "snap" on to the garage door rails.

We have 2 single car garage doors, the first install took about 30 minutes, the second took about 10 minutes.

Ouch! Hopefully you get a cheap, effective fix!

On a related note, the car knows when you're on an incline and warns you about dropping the tailgate.

Shouldn't it know if the proximity sensor is reading something in range of the 4 rear sensors, like, say a garage door, and warn you if you try to drop the tailgate with something in the way?
No, it should not use sensors to hold the tailgate and keep it from opening. Rivian does it right and their approach is just like every other tailgate or lift gate I've owned. I personally don't want to own a vehicle that won't work because someone is standing or moving in front of the sensors. I'm usually standing behind the tailgate when I hit the button on my R1T.
We all learn to keep our head out of the way of a lift gate or to not drop the gate on bikes in a hitch mount.

The way I've seen Rivian already do this:
1) Hitting the button in the back always drops the gate. There's never anything preventing that(other than vehicle being locked)

2) However, if you try to drop the tailgate from inside the cab (tapping on the center screen), if the vehicle is on a significant incline, it won't just drop it, it will first warn you about potential issues:

You still have the option to disregard the warning and drop the tailgate, it's just an extra step.

IMO, this isn't paternalistic or nanny-state, it's thoughtful usage of the vehicle's sensors/awareness.

I've never tried to drop the tailgate with something in the way of the rear proximity sensors, but my first assumption is that the truck WOULD check those in addition to the incline. Just my $0.02, but there's little harm in presenting a warning that the user can actively override if they want. Even if you don't want to be bothered by the second step, it could be helpful for that one time you fat-finger the control and accidentally hit the wrong touch target.

I get that this is aside from the problem of a garage door above the sensor range.

+1, sorry for the hijack. Try reaching out to BARC - Bay Area Rivian Club. They're on the Heylo app and I assume the members there will have a lot of recommendations on local detailers and repair shops.

I have to try to find the damn button every time I need it, how do you accidentally hit it???
Swampnut, I drove onto the ferry, and intended to move the side mirrors inward. That requires using the same menu that opens the tailgate.. Well I hit the wrong button, and if it were not for the ferry staffer I would have dropped it onto the hood of the vehicle he was positioning behind me! Might have been expensive.. Since then I am very careful hitting any of those buttons!!

Irony is I have curbs on the floor, just didn't pull all the way up. Has anyone tried the touchup paints available on Amazon?

This is the excuse to build the new shop garage you want. There’s reason a garage should be so small a Rivian can’t fit with the tailgate down with plenty of clearance.

Yeah, I went with this approach and just purchased a bigger garage. Coincidence? I don’t think so.

Also had the Rivian certified repair shop in Loomis CA repair the scratch for $900.

Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.
Well, I knew it was a matter of time before I accidentally hit the tailgate button while the garage door was closing.

Does anyone know a Northern California or Bay Area mobile paint doctor? I bet some of this can be buffed out and maybe even the plastic. Thanks!

EDIT! Got it fixed at a Rivian certified repair center. The taillight was polished and scratch painted over. It looks like new. Cost $900.

Ouch. I’ve heard of this Infinity Shield garage door sensor that’s supposed to prevent that from happening. It might be worth a look.
