Well, I knew it was a matter of time before I accidentally hit the tailgate button while the garage door was closing.

Does anyone know a Northern California or Bay Area mobile paint doctor? I bet some of this can be buffed out and maybe even the plastic. Thanks!

EDIT! Got it fixed at a Rivian certified repair center. The taillight was polished and scratch painted over. It looks like new. Cost $900.

I have done this to some of my previous vehicles, but so far not to the Rivian.
I sympathize with your situation.

Ouch! Hopefully you get a cheap, effective fix!

On a related note, the car knows when you're on an incline and warns you about dropping the tailgate.

Shouldn't it know if the proximity sensor is reading something in range of the 4 rear sensors, like, say a garage door, and warn you if you try to drop the tailgate with something in the way?

The sensors are in the bumper, below the liftgate. They're not aimed up at the ceiling where the garage door was.

It's not about dropping the tailgate with something in the way. It's about having the tailgate open in the garage and closing the garage door with the tailgate open. If your garage ceiling is relatively low, then the curved bracket that connects the chain to the door drags across the outside of the tailgate.
The bumper sensors can't help you since the garage door is open.

That just looks painful. Not scratching my R1T with the garage door is the ONLY benefit of having to park in the driveway.

BEEN THERE, DONE THAT. Bumped the tailgate button while the garage door was going down. The first word out of my mouth rhymed with "Duck!". I have the paint stick from the Rivian store and was able to touch up the paint, but the plastic top of the tailgate still looks like crap.

The Infinity Shield is an interesting setup, thanks for the info.
It would not necessarily help in my particular situation, as my vehicle can be fully inside the garage with the open hatch also fully inside the garage, and the door closing hardware will still contact the outside of the hatch.

Pad has a chance, good idea.
Removal is only an option if you don't want to have an automatic garage door anymore.

At the risk of sounding preachy, activation of the garage door happens when I am _outside_ of the vehicle or it is the last thing I do as I exit so that there is no chance of some part of the vehicle being activated while the garage door is in transit.

This happened to me too. It was the hinge between garage door panels that gave mine the same scratch pattern. My truck was in the garage while I installed screen protectors and I forgot to place it in screen cleaning mode. This meant I inadvertently opened the tail gate which then rested on the closed garage door as I continued to work inside the cab. I then opened the garage door without realizing the tailgate was open. I bought a touchup paint stick to help hide the scratches and now I’m just waiting for ambient temps to rise a little before “fixing” my mistake.
