Vehicle: 2023 Gen 1 R1S w/22” on Michelin Defender LTX M/S2 (275/50/22 115 @ 48 psi)
Drive Modes: Most long-distance freeway on Conserve/Lowest/Moderate, mountain passes and through most of coastal (Hwy 101) on Sport/Low/Firm, In City/Town AP/Standard/Moderate. Regen Standard in all modes.
Driving Speed: On Interstates and open highways 75~85 MPH (~80% of total miles). No use of ADAS or even the cruise control.

We took a mid-week to mid-week road trip from South OC, CA to Bend, onto Portland and down the coast of Oregon. In all 9 days 2,534 miles using 1,175 kWh, or an average of 2.16 miles/kWh. Total charging cost using all Tesla SC w/membership was $467 at the average of $0.43/kWh. If we were traveling the same in a similar sized ICE SUV (e.g., XC90, Durango and even Tahoe and alike), probably average 20 mpg, and the average gas price at $6.00 (over 6 in CA and high 5’s in OR), that would be 127 gallons and fuel cost of $760. Roughly $300 more.

Day 1: to Sacramento (Woodland), CA from South OC leaving home at 100% charge and two charging stops (Lost Hills and Lanthrop). Hotel had L2 chargers so we charged overnight back to 100%.

Day 2: to Klamath Falls, OR with a charging stop at Redding CA (charged at the Sundail Bridge) and at Klamath Falls. No L2 charging at the hotel unfortunately. Much of the drive in steady rain in Oregon.

Day 3 to Bend, OR with stops in Crater Lake NP (had sleet) and Tumalo Falls. We spent the next day in Bend (visit w/family) and went to High Desert Museum for Bird of Prey exhibition. Hotel had L2 charger to top off for Day 5 to 100%

Day 5: to Portland OR, with a stop at the Timberline Lodge at Mt Hood. Learned that the Timberline Lodge was used for the exterior of the Overlook Hotel in “The Shining”. Charged at Fairview, OR and found a nice short trail to hike while charging. Once in Portland, we spent the next day in town as well as a short drive out for the Multnomah Falls. Took a very steep hike to the top of the waterfall (~0.8miles) and a big disappointment at the top. Waterfalls are much better looking from the bottom than at the top.

Day 7: to Reedsport, OR along the coastal drive with several stops. First to the Shipwreck of the Peter Iredale, then onto the Haystock Rock, then onto the Cape Mears Lighthouse. Also stopped at the Tillamook and took in the factory self-tour (yes, the cheese company). Since we were there, charged while inside the Tillamook (Tesla SC in the parking lot), and the final charge at the Newport OR. We did find a bald eagle sitting on the branch and glad I have a 300mm prime lens!

Day 8: to Williams, CA. The only reason to stop here was to lodge for the final drive home. Charged at Southerlin, OR and at Weed, CA. Williams is about an hour north of Sacramento. Luckily, we found Granzella's Restaurant & Deli. What a place. Typical Italian deli but has a lounge in the back that best described as a sprots bar with dozens of taxidermized game ammonals including two full sized bears. Lots of deer, elk and venison heads. Bit creepy for my liking…

Day 9: to home and glad to be able to sleep in my own bed. Charged at Firebaugh, CA and at the Tejon Ranch Outlets CA.

Very nice pictures. Better than most I've seen in Oregon State sponsored travel guides. I hope our state treated you and your family well.

By the way, for what it's worth, if you ever spend the night in Woodland, CA again, the Hampton Inn & Suites has a L3 charger in the parking lot operated by EvGateway. I used it this last winter on my way to Borrego Springs for some mid winter cycling. Plugged in while I was unloading my gear and bikes. By the time I was done unloading, I had reached my target SOC. I don't remember the exact amount of power being delivered by I think it was around 90 kW (rated at 120 max). Price was reasonable. $0.52/kWh.

Cheers!

My wife and I are planning on a National Parks road trip for next year, and even though it's only a state away, I've never been to Crater Lake in my entire life. It's on the list for sure!

Thanks for the info.

The L2 charging was all free. Stayed at Home2 Suites (Hilton) and they had 4 L2 Tesla Universal chargers at Woodland, and one each of NACS and J1772 at Bend Home2 Suites. If you've never stayed at one of these, its all simple, clean and a nice place to sleep with breakfast included.

In all, we charged just over 100kWh for free :). What lodging give you free gas, right?

Nice trip! Terrific photos!

Here is what Crater Lake looked like a couple weeks ago. Still lots of snow, but no sleet.

Oh, so that's what it looks like when clear. Nice. The weather was not great but my wife had never been in a sleet. She didn't know what sleet was. She's born and raised in SoCal...

Maybe I’ll check it out my next trip south. As long as it’s in the Hilton family I’m earning points so it works for me 😉
