Can't believe it's coming up on a year of Gen 2 R1 Quad ownership! I've been traveling way more than anticipated this past year so mileage is low, but I absolutely love the vehicle.

Got the registration renewal and it is painful:

I also got the R2 invitation last week and wanted to share some of the local marketing. Briefly, we're still a maybe on fulfilling the R2 order. It was originally to replace my wife's Gen 1 Quad R1S but after a couple test drives she's leaning towards keeping the Gen 1 Quad. She doesn't want to give up her Limestone color and she did not like the R2 frunk. It was about 104 degrees the day of our test drive in desert and closing the frunk hurt her hand. It was too hot to touch and required more force than anticipated to close. We both use our frunks daily. I personally might lease the R2 if my wife doesn't want it to replace my Ioniq 5 lease, which I used for business travel, but if we do fulfill the order, we'd wait for Coastal Cloud. Anyway, I found their marketing email somewhat amusing:

That wording is...something else? Why does it feel like a scam? haha

Yeah this feels like a really targeted phishing attempt... I haven't seen anyone else receive such an email. If Rivian is marketing this way then that is disappointing.

Yeah, my gen 1 is down to $500-some. AZ fee structure is REALLY bad for the Rivian. It was great for my Jeeps and of course, my older vehicles. Why Jeep vs Rivian? They base it on the MSRP of the base, lowest trim possible model. My $80k Jeep was taxed at whatever was the theoretical minimum with crank windows and rubber mats, under $40k. Rivian has no base model really.

My EV motorcycle was also ludicriously expensive to license, because again, it was just a single model/option and was overpriced. The actual selling price was always much less, but you're taxed on the MSRP.

Yes, AZ new vehicle registration is expensive ... based on MSRP as others have stated, then goes down a % each following year. However, early on EVs had a special low rate. My 2020 Model Y was just over $100 for a 5 year registration. Then the law changed and EV registration is just like ICE. Oh well, it was nice while it lasted. It may be changing again to add a small extra fee for EVs since we do not pay gasoline tax.
