the overall efficiency of 3.0 mi/kwh is what I'd expect for this spec. I have a feeling some folks with more efficient tires, better conditions, etc. will be able to push the R2 to ~3.5 mi/kwh.
I agree. For reference, one my best trips ever was last week in my 2024 Model 3 Performance with 19” wheels. I got 266 miles on 89% of battery or roughly 300 miles on the full battery. I had to avg at least 70 mph during the trip too. That’s about 4.25 miles per kWh. So with R2 having a larger battery, I bet it could get close to the same 300 miles in the same conditions I drove in. Those headwinds Tom had are range killers. Pretty great it matches a Model 3 Performance!

Rivian's own information on R2 Premium is evidence. Same Pirelli Scorpion MS (same overall diameter) on either 20" or 21" wheels, same estimated max range of 330 mi.

Need to correct for elevation (6,000 ft) and resulting 20% lower density of air means compared to a result at sea level, this is over stated by several tenths…I get a corrected value of ~2.7 MPK. Temp likely also was a factor during this test…

Translating to Real-World RangeThe Rivian R2 features a usable battery capacity of approximately 86.8 kWh. Based on your target efficiency numbers, here is how the real-world math shakes out: Configuration / ScenarioEfficiencyExpected Total Range6,000 ft Baseline (70 mph)3.0 MPK~260 MilesSea Level Corrected (70 mph)2.7 MPK~234 MilesAll-Season Tires + Flat Ground~3.15 MPK~273 MilesDitching ATs & Dropping to 65 mph~3.5 MPK~303 Miles

Would seem that the AS 21” should give 10% more which is pretty much spot on for highway range expectation.

And the lower density negatively affects the air/fuel ratio.

For any willing new R2 owners, would love to see 15 minute runs for the following speeds:
50 mph (speedo = 52)
65 mph (speedo = 67)
80 mph * - as long as complies with posted speed limit (speedo = 82);)
