Charging at Rivian Adventure Network with Pet comfort on a hot day

The message just said it was charging slower. That does not imply that you must turn off the climate control. There is only so much cooling capacity that has to cool the cabin and the battery pack. If it's hot out and you are asking for a lot of cooling for the cabin, there is less available for the battery pack. Simple as that.

As for your Tesla, do you know that it wasn't throttled? Or does Tesla just not tell you when it does?

Tesla did notify me when it was throttling speeds when charging.

It appears the issue was that the combined heat load of charging plus Climate Control was greater than the cooling capacity.

How do you know the Tesla did not throttle? Did it say "Not throttling due to heat and A/C"?

Rivian didn't expect you to turn the A/C off and the message did not indicate as such. The Rivian is a bigger, heavier vehicle. It inherently takes longer and more energy to charge. Rivian increasing the charge rate won't somehow solve this concern - it would make it worse.

Did you precondition before the charging stop, i.e. was it scheduled in a route plan or did you manually start preconditioning? If not, then it's on you.

Just made a trip from Kansas City to Montana last week. It was in the 90s and I got the same message at the RAN in Hays, KS and Flagler, CO. I don't think I got the message at the Supercharger in Evansville, WY but I'll pay more attention on the way home. I don't remember seeing this message before and have charged at RANs before in hot temps. I believe that message came with the latest update.

I hadn't seen the message before either and I am sure I have charged when it was hotter but have only had the vehicle for a few months.

As pointed out earlier the vehicle only has a certain amount of cooling capacity shared between the cabin and battery so a lot of it depends on the starting temperature of the battery pack and the set temp of the cabin AC if both are needing max capacity something has to give.

Knowing exactly what it said would be helpful. Was it telling you outright "Turn off Climate Control" or was it more of a suggestion to increase charge rate?

I've charged in 95 temps with A/C on and have not seen this message, most recently at RAN in Wilmington, Delaware on July 4. Battery temp was around 112 at the end of the session.

I have never turned off climate control while at a DCFC, and I've never see that message. I wonder if climate hold and pet mode are somehow treated differently than just having climate on.

I get that message a lot. I’m driving from Phoenix to CA in the summer and charging when it’s 105-110. The Ac also won’t be as cold and the battery will be over 130 degrees when finished. My Tesla did the same where the AC wouldn’t be as cold when it was trying to cool the battery. I find a bigger hit when the NACS adapter get really hot as well. Just chalk it up to to joys of summer driving.

I also regularly charge in really hot places in the AZ/CA desert and never see this. I always leave climate on, since it's hot, even when I go do something else.

I just came back from Wisconsin yesterday. I was pulling my '25 InTech Sol Dusk, and had to stop in Menomonie Wisconsin for a charge. I ended up at a Kwik Trip because of the trailer, and charged from 20% to 75% in 90 F temps. My R1T never de-rated the charge, although the cooling system was at full bore when I pulled out of the station to get back on I-94. I was traveling alone, so if I'd received the message I would have just shut off the climate control and gone into the gas station, so I didn't have to worry about any little ones or pets. And, I guess if I had to choose, having the passengers stay comfortable takes priority for me.

Yeah, I bet that is really the crux of this issue. Having normal AC on, and charging, the Rivian will just adjust both as needed to manage things, but because pet mode is on, it wants to be clear that it is prioritizing the safety of the cabin and it may affect charging. I bet its nothing more than a cover ther rear end liability thing / peace of mind for pet owners.

The AC is used also to cool the battery pack so if it’s being maxed out to cool the cabin on a very hot day as well as charge, the vehicle will throttle the charging rate so the occupants can stay cool and safe.

CharonPDX: You are probably not the first person with 1% to 90% challenge, and you won't be the last. So, how long was the *LONG* charging session?

I've had a few in the 70-80 minute range.

I've never seen this before, but I don't charge past 80% when on roadtrips in our R1T or Model Y. 75-85% is always slow regardless of outside temp, climate on/off but without any messages.
