AI Summary:

Here is a detailed breakdown of the video from Out of Spec Testing, where they conduct a "Run to Zero" test on a 2027 Rivian R2 Performance:

Overview & Goal
  • Vehicle: 2027 Rivian R2 Performance [01:43].
  • Objective: Test how the Rivian R2 handles running completely out of battery power, tracking all error messages, buffers past 0%, and performance drops [00:19].
  • Test Conditions: The car was driven in Conserve mode on a track, maintaining speeds between 30 and 55 mph [01:58], [02:46].
State of Charge (SOC) Progression
  • 13% State of Charge: Minor power limitations first begin to show on the display gauge [02:51].
  • 5% State of Charge (18 miles displayed range): Low battery warning pops up ("Battery very low, charge soon") [03:03].
  • 3% State of Charge: The car travels 4.2 miles from the start of the test with no noticeable reduction in throttle response [04:24].
  • 2% State of Charge: Screen displays: "Battery almost empty - performance reduced to conserve energy" [05:07]. The vehicle still easily maintains speed [05:14].
  • 1% State of Charge: Battery indicator displays an exclamation point, but 55 mph speed is maintained without issues [05:58].
Driving Past 0% SOC (The Buffer)
  • Reaching 0% SOC [06:24]: The car hits 0% battery, but power remains completely normal, allowing the driver to maintain 55 mph [06:36].
  • 2.8 to 4.6 Miles Past 0% [07:17]: The car continues at 55 mph. The power meter gauge gradually lowers, but driving behavior remains unchanged [07:47].
  • 8.1 Miles Past 0% (Turtle Mode) [08:42]: Turtle Mode activates with the notification "Performance limited - drive with caution" [09:07].
  • Loss of Propulsion [09:02]: Power drops immediately upon entering Turtle Mode, forcing the vehicle to coast to a stop [09:07].
  • Total Buffer Distance: The Rivian R2 traveled 8.1 miles of powered driving past 0% before losing throttle, coasting to a complete stop at 8.9 miles [12:18].
Recovery & Takeaways
  • Turtle Mode Implementation: The hosts noted that Turtle Mode triggers right as power completely cuts out, rather than giving a gradual speed restriction before total power loss [10:47], [14:35].
  • Recharging: The team attached a Charge Rigs mobile DC fast charger [13:11]. The R2 immediately accepted charge at 200 amps (pack voltage ~296V under load) [14:08] without needing contactor resets or dealer service [13:39].
  • Error Clearing: Low battery error messages cleared after charging up past 9–10% [16:41].

One of the comments in that video was "I'm going to watch this after work". 🤣

Y'all, the open tabs in my browser looks like this:

x about 400

And I wonder why Firefox is using like half of my 64GB of memory.

I'm never going to have time to watch all these. I pray for my browser to crash so I can escape this prison of my own making.

TL;DR. Stop with the too-long videos. Just tell us what happens. 😂

I don’t watch Out of Spec videos because the guy makes them way too long, perhaps so that YouTube can show more ads and he gets more revenue.

Thank you @Katsudon for the summary! It seems like the R2 handles being driven down to zero very well.

It was one of the shortest out of spec videos I've ever seen. Clocked in at around 17 minutes.

When the “TLDV” summary requires scrolling three times, you know the video is… TOO. DAMN. LONG.
