Hey everyone,

I’m curious about the specific emergency logic in the Rivian Autonomy Platform (especially on the Gen 2s). I was recently talking to a mechanic about his Ioniq 9, and he was under the impression his car would "pull over safely" if he had a medical emergency behind the wheel.

It got me thinking about my Rivian and the "Watch the Road" warnings. If a driver were to actually pass out or become incapacitated while Driver+ is engaged.

Does the car actually attempt to navigate to a shoulder/pull over, or does it just perform a controlled stop in its current lane?
Once stopped, do the 4-ways (hazards) come on automatically?
Does it trigger an SOS/emergency call through the vehicle's LTE?
I’ve been tempted to see what happens if I ignore the prompts, but if it will call 911 for example that would be bad!

Would love to hear from anyone who has seen the technical docs or actually tested or had this happen.

Thank
Danny

I have the owner guide in my Apple Books and it is searchable.

It’s searchable even when opened from Rivian’s site directly in Safari also.

If only one could search the bloody guide.....
I found a way due to needing a better way to get what I need efficiently, I keep all my manuals on my Macbook and iPhone - in PDF format. Because PDF's are searchable, and I can carry everything I need everywhere!

I use an app called GoodReader to store, manage, and use PDFs on all of my devices. It's particularly great on the iPad. It allows complex, AI-ish searches when needed.

I can see why it would be taken that way. No harm meant.

I could have said:

"Referring someone to the owner's manual is not a tip, or a gift of teaching, imho. I therefore agree with the constructive criticism directed toward the original comment that the post I quoted was referring to."

I think the original was more efficient, but I did not intend to troll, and I apologize for getting a second degree away from the OP.

Still interested in the question raised by the OP!

When we had a 12V issue I got the message that the Rivian was slowing to a stop - Scary as sh*t because I was in a construction zone on the PA Turnpike without a shoulder so I would have been blocking one of two lanes during evening rush hour. We limped along (with flashers) and barely made it to a shoulder just before an exit.

I bring this up only because I know (at least our Gen 1) it will bring you to a complete stop in the lane you're in - it's not going to nicely pull you over to the shoulder. The OP's concern was a medical event while they're alone in the car with DA engaged. I'm confident the Rivian will behave as described in the manual, but you're still in big trouble because you're probably traveling on a multi-lane highway and will be coming to a complete stop in a travel lane. At least without Driver Assist you'd probably drift off the road at some point and would be less of a danger to others.

Sorry, I was just making a fish pun.

A red herring if you will.

I know, puns are hit and miss, and they make some people crabby.

I once told ten puns in a row, to see if at least one would get a laugh, but no pun in ten did.
