Does anyone have experience with swapping the 22” stock sport rims with 20” rims with a high efficiency road tire, such as Hankook ION HT? Not looking for a difference with AT tires, would be interested in range difference between the two wheels with like high efficiency, low rolling resistance tires.

I have a max battery R1T dual. The stated range of the 22” wheels is 420 miles and I’ve found it to be somewhat accurate depending on driving conditions.

The rims with hubcaps have a slight aerodynamic advantage over the other options, but neither of the rims you are asking about are super-aerodynamic or super-light weight.

So any range differences between them are going to be pretty much 100% from the rubber. If you were to put the same brand/model tire on those two rims you should not expect there to be any differences in range.

I have not seen any efficiency comparisons between the OEM Michelin tires and that particular Hankook tire, but I would not expect there to be a particularly large difference. It might be 1% better. Or 1% worse. And either way you are probably not going to be able to measure the difference outside of a lab.

Thanks for the information, very helpful.

I did find when I put my winter set 3-peak rated tires on 20” rims the range decreased significantly, but I expected that due to the tire makeup for snow/ice.

I’d like to keep the 20” rims with a higher sidewall if the range difference isn’t going to be significant when I switch back to the summer set.

I do access trailheads on USFS roads in the summer but I don’t need a pure A/T tire for that.

Particular to this thread I’ve only found one tire which actually has the EU Class A listing for rolling resistance listed in it’s description: Goodyear EfficientGrip 2 SUV 275/60R20 115H

This is old but probably still relevant to your question. Scroll to 25:00 if you just want the conclusions. Even with this data in hand (22" is 7% more efficient than 20" AT, 21" is the highest efficiency), I still went with the 20" ATs because I do off-road and/or ski year-round.

will all seasons on the 20” wheel be just as efficient as all seasons on the 22”?

This is the closest tool to help you get your answer.

There is no apples to apples comparison bc the 22” tire isn’t available in a 20” size for Rivian. Looking at stats, Hankook ION HT has 3 cars adding to the data and 5K miles vs. Scorpion MS 22” has 1.5M miles and almost 600 cars adding data. I think one main benefit of the 20” is comfort and the Hankook tire will get a decent mileage. I’m close to pulling the trigger on a 20” set to replace ATs for Summer-Fall months.

I just switched my winter set to 20” Atomic AWDF wheels with Michelin Defender LTX tires. They replaced the stock 22” wheels with Pirelli tires.

Once I cycle through the season I’ll report the data. The winter set had a pretty good MPK for a winter set that were 3-peak rated so we’ll see how these do.

The wheel/tire set are lighter than the stock by a few pounds and the tires are rated fairly high for low rolling resistance so I’m hopeful.

I knew I wanted to go to a 20” wheel, but even though I am on USFS roads a lot in summer didn’t really need an AT tire.
