Maybe on your Rivian it does, but it doesn't on my R1T or R1S. Or on others posters who have chimed in on this thread
It's because it's a bit difficult to half tap to cancel. Full tap in the opposite direction just activates the turn signal that way.

It's also possible that the signal is canceling on its own and your timing is such that you are now activating in the opposite direction.

Others on this thread aren't saying that they can't deactivate the turn signals, but that it isn't the most repeatable process due to the nuances of half v full press and auto cancelation.

Rade said they do not cancel out, and when trying to cancel them out, they blink in the other direction, and on other person agreed with him.
I did try and let the blinker automatically turn off on its own when switching lanes on the highway like another poster suggested and it worked! I'll be doing that going forward. Unfortunately that does not work in streets when changing lanes.

Rivian implemented "Smart Turn Signal" functionality, which automatically cancels the fully engaged turn signal after completing a lane change, in the 2025.10 software update, released in late March 2025. The turn signal automatically turns off after you perform a manual lane change on a highway only.

On city streets the signal behaves as most other vehicles do. A light tap in either direction will engage three (or four, don’t remember) signals. This also works on highways. Also, when you fully engaged a turn signal on streets for a lane change, you can cancel it with a light tap in the opposite direction. I will not auto cancel as it does on highways. Or, if you’re making a full turn with the signal fully engaged it should cancel itself once the turn is complete.

If this is not your experience, there is a problem and if necessary follow up with Rivian.

How to move forward or backwards less than a foot.

The throttle is not sensitive enough at the null position to feather the power very slightly. it ends up being jerky motion.

Need free roll before going on stop hold under 5mph.
Coming from a Tesla, this is exactly it. There seems to be a lot of unnecessary application of the brakes at those very low speeds.
