Coastal Cloud is a light gray, similar to the Ocean Coast in the R1 … not white. I’m guessing they changed name due to accent wood, but unclear.
Ok that’s good news for me then. I’m out on white but a light grey I would totally buy. Will need to see it in person of course

Anyone familiar with how the configurator worked with the R1? I’m a late reservation just trying to understand if it will give you timelines based on different options (I.e. since I’m late would going coastal cloud not delay me since I’m late anyway?). Or is is just pick your options then you can never change. Am I able to start with black interior to see if it is an earlier date than switch to white interior? I know no one knows for sure just curious if anyone had experience with the R1
Yes, many of us.
All we can say for sure right now is that it won't work the same way. (Because it's already different and because the configurator changed significantly over time.)
I can make some educated guesses, but what's the point? When it goes live that will be the only source of information that matters wrt option availability, pricing, and expected delivery.

Just a few weeks more ...

We won’t really know, early R1’s were configured at deposit, so we didn’t know when the’d be making your config. What we saw was LE’s, Quads (large pack), then Duals, Gen2s, then Tris (when Max became available). Mid way through the quads they started offering stocked inventory, gave you the ability to switch to what they had available if you were near reservation or had ordered something they knew was a long wait (other peoples orders who had cancelled after they went into production).

They’ve learned, they seem to be stocking up inventory and have narrowed the options for R2 LEs. I’m betting they fill what people have ordered from inventory as they can, before building custom configs. May start offering folks waiting for less common configs stocked inventory…we’ll see.

Thank you for your insight this makes sense. Wasn’t ready for an EV back when R1 came out this will be my first so I’m excited. Sad I didn’t get into line sooner I will be excited to test drive in June though!

Not sure why people are so impatient for configuration data. If you don't have a day one reservation at minimum and if you haven't owned a Rivian previously, then you're already likely to be well down the priority list in relation to the number of units available to purchase. Plenty of time to fully configure what you want in June and then wait impatiently for weeks or months or into 2027.

To put that in context, Rivian guided 20-25k R2 for 2026. IIRC a street analyst suggested a split of 800-2Q, 7k-3Q and 15k-4Q for a total of 22.8k, and if the 800 is in addition to the 1600 units employees are reportedly getting in 2Q, then that is 24.4k in 2026.

It seems likely Rivian will be pushing to exceed their guidance, but if we run with the 7k forecast for now, then it wouldn't surprise me if Rivian can sell all of that 7k-3Q production to previous/current Rivian R1 owners with reservations for R2 ... and then there is everyone else ahead of you unless you have an early reservation.

I suspect this may also influence which colors are available first, because however flexible the paint line is Rivian won't want to be frequently changing paint colors for efficiency/ramp speed reasons during low initial production numbers.

So if Rivian look at which have been the most popular colors historically, they could even look at previous/current R1 owner color preferences, combine that list with whatever makes most sense for Rivian from a manufacturing perspective and then make those the first colors available. Which is probably why Borealis isn't front and center.

Then to cap it all off, Rivian don't even need input from the configurator in order to build the first units with the low initial production. They can just build to stock for the different colors and sell every one many times over. There's little to nothing that needs configuring for LE since about the only option seems to be color and wheel/tire choice.

To be clear I'd like to get a R2 LE, but with a January 2025 reservation and no prior ownership it doesn't seem likely I'll even be able to get a 2026 R2.

To summarize: this is called Manufacturing 101 lol.

Yes, but if it isn't spelt out, probably multiple times, then people will still continue to think in silos and not connect the dots to understand the reality of R2 availability through 2026. I see the lack of understanding in multiple posts every day on this site. I suspect a lot of people are in for a rude awakening when they realize.

Is Launch green the ONLY color that will be an upgrade charge on LE?
Look at the pricing for colors on the R1S/R1T, only LA Silver is free. Highly doubt colors other than Esker Silver will be free on the R2.

yup. i think colors other than esker silver will be a paid upgrade. possibly a little more for launch green.

i am pretty set on getting the coastal cloud interior...i hope itʻs with all the launch goodies, but if not, thatʻs ok.

We're excited. Day 1 within the first hour reservation holder and current R1 owner and 20 miles from a service center. Wife is chomping at the bit to get one. She loves purple but doesn't like the borealis. Her color is the Catalina Cove. So we are sitting at the future configurator screen banging the glass, saying open, open, open.

I don't agree that the "consensus" is esker silver is the only free option. Travis Ketchum stated all but Launch Green were included (no cost, free, gratis) in the Launch Edition and he's normally pretty in the know. I guess we'll find out in June.

This really isn't that hard. When R1 launched most of the colors were paid upgrades on the Launch Edition, as were Ocean Coast & Forest Edge interiors (when they were finally available). Expect the same for R2. That's how I read the email. Maybe we'll be pleasantly surprised and Rivian will buck common industry practice, but I wouldn't hold my breath. C'mon June!

Yeah, we'll have to wait until June. But I don't read the email that way at all. It specifically calls out Launch Green costing extra, in a different paragraph. There is no mention of the other colors costing extra, I would think they'd make it clear if those are also extra. Why point out Launch Green and not the others? Also the R1 Launch Edition offered upgraded wheels and tires for free, so I could easily see Rivian doing free paint upgrades instead of wheels/tires.

And paid paint upgrades are speculation on everyone's part. Travis calls them out specifically as being free, I assume he got that information from somewhere besides his backside.

Like I said...maybe we'll be surprised they do something differently than they've done for over four years. 🤷‍♂️ It certainly won't hurt my feelings but given the offerings I would most likely choose Launch Green at extra cost anyway 🤣

Since you mention wheel packages I would be thrilled if they repeat my Gen1 LE experience and offer the 20" ATs as a "free" choice for R2 LE. When I chose my truck in June 2022 the LE package meant I could get the 20" ATs at no cost while paying for Red Canyon.

With the R1, Rivian provided updated delivery estimates every couple of months. If you changed anything with your configuration, you would have to wait until the next time they updated everyone's estimates to see how the new configuration affected your wait time.
