  1. Fixed my tonneau !

A Rivian mobile service tech fixed my stuck powered tonneau cover today. The fix: lots of water! After messing a round a little with his computer he asked for a hose and sprayed a ton of water all over the thing. Et voila! Now it works ”as new”. But just to be safe, I’m leaving it open until the...
  2. Canyonlands White Rim Road Trip with R1T -- 2600 miles / 5 days off grid

I'm sure it would be easy enough with the All Season tires. The biggest risk is getting a flat by hitting a rock with the side wall. And that's not much different with the AT tires.
  3. Hell's Gate in my R1T

thanks. That backs up my intuition that to make it up Hell's Gate I had to not stop.
  4. Hell's Gate in my R1T

Well, mostly. But sometimes lateral movement is helpful. You'll find lots of videos of Jeeps spinning all 4 for a few seconds with some lateral movement until just the right spot is found and traction resumes. Done carefully this is a useful technique. So let the accelerator pedal be the...
  5. Hell's Gate in my R1T

Well, that depends on how fast the reaction is. Maybe Rivian needs a faster computer?
  6. Hell's Gate in my R1T

Is that what it means when it says "Performance limited"?? I've had that a couple of times and always assumed it was some sort of traction control nanny-ism. "Oh, no! your wheels are spinning! I'm going to shut you down." But if it really is overheating, then the warning message should say so.
  7. Hell's Gate in my R1T

Very nice. I don't think I could have done it that slowly with the R1T.
  8. Hell's Gate in my R1T

I'm envisioning a different way to thinking about the accelerator pedal. Usually we think of it as controlling the amount of force applied to the wheels. Perhaps in very low speed rock crawling situations it should instead by a simple speed control: push down, the wheels spin faster; each...
  9. Hell's Gate in my R1T

Wouldn't it be cheaper and easier to beef up the cooling system?
  10. Hell's Gate in my R1T

Yes! But I think I would put the upper limit at more like 5 or 6mph. The trick would be to, via software, transfer the torque previously applied to a slipping wheel to the others that still have traction. That's what a mechanical locker does. What matters is to maintain a constant amount of...
  11. Hell's Gate in my R1T

I was running about 24 psi in all 4 tires.
  12. Rivian Patents Low-Range Crawler Gearbox (Bolt-on) for Off-Roading

I'm not sure I see the need for an extra low gear ratio. I've never even come close to needing more torque even in extremely steep climbs. And I find the accelerator control in climbing situations to be very good, too. Going down a bumpy obstacle, OTOH, I find it quite difficult to control my...
  13. Hell's Gate in my R1T

I use the term "lockers" loosely in this context to mean "software lockers" ie "better individual motor controls". I was actually pleasantly surprised how well the current software works in most cases. There's a lot of unnecessary wheel slip but mostly I was able to get thru the obstacles...
  14. Canyonlands White Rim Road Trip with R1T -- 2600 miles / 5 days off grid

Our camping days are over but our R1T easily did the White Rim road in one day. White Rim is a very easy trail, just the thing for the Rivian. We also did Seven Mile Rim the day before. It was just about the limit of what I would feel comfortable doing with the Rivian.
  15. Hell's Gate in my R1T

I'm not sure when that happened but it was definitely not on Hell's Gate. I think I snagged a tree branch on an earlier part of the trip. No big deal: an off-road vehicle with no scratches isn't being used to the fullest :)
  16. Canyonlands White Rim Road Trip with R1T -- 2600 miles / 5 days off grid

I stopped by there on Sep 27 just to give it a try. Worked great:
  17. Hell's Gate in my R1T

On another part of the trail we smashed the front bumper pretty badly by misjudging a ledge. Can you believe the "skid plate" under the front is plastic? There is a substantial composite skid plate under the battery but the ends are pretty vulnerable. I had to constantly remind myself to baby...
  18. Hell's Gate in my R1T

Quick video of my R1T going up Hell's Gate in Moab. I could have taken a slightly better line. And it might have been better going a little faster to maybe avoid some of the tire slipping. But this is a lot harder than it looks, going fast would be terrifying. Lockers would help a LOT.
  19. Driver+ / Highway Assist vs. Tesla Autopilot: An Extensive Owner's Review

I think I've found a workaround for the jerkiness induced when kicking it off of lane keeping by just forcing the wheel: if I turn the wheel in the opposite direction not quite enough to kick off the lane keeping then quickly back the way I really intend that seems to fool it into letting go...
  20. Driver+ / Highway Assist vs. Tesla Autopilot: An Extensive Owner's Review

I agree with most of the gripes above. And I'll add one more: I hate that it slows down for corners, and that it does so in the worst possible way. EG: Cruising down the freeway at 75mph; approaching a curve with a radius of 1/2 mile or so; driving manually I would not even think for a moment...
