Was expecting this reply. Were I back home in West Virginia I'd have one of the smallest trucks around..
Agree. Not sure that I've seen any particularly attractive alternatives in the 5 seater dept compared to Rivian though.. Most have sub 250mi range, and the MY interior is so meh. Plus...
I realize that I'm talking to a forum full of enthusiasts, but is anyone pretty worried about the size? Haven't had a chance to test drive the R1S yet but I harken back to a short road trip I drove in a family member's QX80 and that thing was a UNIT. Filled up the whole lane, had a lot of mass...
This is totally true, but it's way easier to patch bugs on robust foundational infra than something that makes bad assumptions/design choices. A year into one-off patch hacks creates an insane web where they might need to spend a year refactoring everything to make more progress on complicated...
The software thing actually worries me a touch. Not that it's not fixable but if the quality of the engineering is low then it may always be slow/inefficient/power-hungry. Tesla doesn't pay FAANG level but my perception is that they attract pretty smart folks. Time will tell I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Yeah i was thinking more one of these, which are custom to the truck bed. Better range too.
That's my thought too. Currently a FG R1S holder. 2023 can't come soon enough :)
No, a hard top camper that would fit in the bed of the truck. Like these. I'd rather sleep in the back of an R1S over a soft tent in the winter any day.
Yeah, yesterday they closed the road in and so it was a private pow day for those who drove up at 5 am + those smart enough to camp the night...
Got back yesterday from car camping at Crystal Mt in my Model 3 for a pow day (see image!). The roads close/become impassable occasionally + you get to skip a 2+ hour drive so it's increasingly a nice tool in my ski life. What are people's opinions on the R1S vs R1T for car camping in the...
IIRC from the delivery window surveys just about everyone is.
Charging my Model 3 on a normal 120V plug is 1 kW. So, 0 -> 100 would be 100H. You can fully charge a model 3 in about 6 hours on a level 2 wall charger. It'll be even more significant on a Rivian since they're 130 kWh batteries.
Just adding another datapoint to Frank - It's an 85 mi trip & about 4500 vertical feet to Crystal for me too. My Model 3 uses about 70% on a round trip. About half the drive is at 60 mph on a single lane road though. No ski box/mounting.
I'd expect you to be fine but with how boxy the R1S is...
Second half of 2023
R1S Adventure trim 7 seat, FG + FE, 21"
Seattle, WA
11/9/2021 order
I was hoping for first half of 2023, looks like I just missed the cutoff. Well, gives me time to make sure I can drive this UNIT through crowded Seattle streets.
