the email from Rivian says specifically that you need to be plugged in to precondition the battery. However it’s not working for me - batter was 30 degrees after a scheduled warmup and plugged.
Actually it’s neither, it’s 100% the tires. Check the posts where some people put all season tires on the 20s - they get better efficiency than the 22s.
I just tested this out! If you just warm up the cabin, the motor and batteries did not warm up at all after 10 minutes. If you navigate to a charger then the motors definitely do get hot and warm the battery even while in park.
I find it takes over an hour to get the battery from 35 degrees to over 55 degrees through charging. Kind of sceptical that turning on heat will substantially warm the battery before departure?
There is no way to precondition the battery manually today. Turning on the heat doesn’t do it, the only workaround is to charge for 60-90 minutes before a cold weather trip to maximize range.
No there is more to it than that. For me it was confirmed AC blowing in third row while front 2 rows were blasting hot heat. I let it run for a while to confirm it wasn't just cold ambient air. Even took the temp from the vents and it was frigid 30-something degree air from third row and 90...
All I can tell ya is that plenty of people taking delivery today ordered 9+ months ago. The last post in the R1S FB group just confirmed config and ordered late 2021.
Maybe if you order today, but deliveries today were likely ordered 6-9 months ago. And even a 4 month backlog means they have enough demand that is shouldn’t have affected deliveries in 2023.
